93-gsx750f

I have a '91 750. I run Bridgestone BT-016's and really like them. Used a 150/60 R17 on the rear. I would recommend them over BT-45's, but those are good tires too, just not radials.

Will buy radials?

Thanks. Right now I'm mostly settled on Michelin Pilot Power radials, the same prices as BT45's but people rave about the stickiness and mileage.
Fact is here in the flat Midwest we mostly just wear out the middle of the tire.

Valves?

Valves?

Checked and adjusted all the valve clearances today, lookin' good.
These engines have adjustable rocker arms so it was easy to do.
The PO believed the engine was burning oil, but all the spark plugs were clean, the compression checked out great, and the valves checked out good. So it must have been oil seeping out the valve cover gaskets and onto the headers. Have a new set to go in, and that's the last test.
I can start reassembling the bike, start it up and go.

It Started! Ready to be fitted out?

It Started! Ready to be fitted out?

Yesser, it started up, ran rough on maybe 2 cylinders, put out plenty of gray smoke and the new header paint smoked up good just for help.
But it kept runnin' and gettin' better. All 4 cylinders got goin' and all the carbon burned out of the exhaust system and the paint stopped smokin' too. I closed off the choke and raised the idle.
Then it got real good, with a clean exhaust. There's plenty of power in that engine. It's got the OEM exhaust system, so it's got an understated sound like a GS, not tuned to be loud or sound wicked, but that engine has power. Revs up to 8000 right now, I didn't want to go past that.
Ordered a new battery, needs tires too, registration and insurance. $500 right there. :(

Damn, got a knock in there?

Damn, got a knock in there?

Seems to be a knock sound coming from under the valve cover someplace.
I started it up again and used a hose for a stethoscope to locate the source of the knock.
It's coming from the location of the #4 exhaust rocker or the end of the camshaft. That's where the sound is loudest.
Could it be the exhaust camshaft walking or knocking sideways?
Thanks.

As you'll have seen when you did the valves the rockers are located sideways by springs - lift the cover (again) and check no springs are broken or missing. Could also be a cam cap not down correctly.
Generally endfloat on the cams isn't a problem on the air/oil GSXR motors.
You do realise your motor is a detuned GSXR 750 J...detuned mainly by lower lift cams. The J cams drop in....

Has to be opened up?

Has to be opened up?

How you making out with the top end knock Buffalo Bill? Any luck finding the issue?
I was compelled to ride the bike, so I put all the panels on and took it out for a few miles. The bike had power, but something is wrong. The noise was privately embarrassing for me at stop lights.
I plan to take the cover off and spin the engine with the starter. I just might be able to pinpoint the sound and problem. Could be messy.
If a cam bearing is bad than the whole head is bum. :-&
Will do this weekend

Bummer?

Bummer?

Is that a worn cam lobe? Looks like the cam, and cam follower will have to be replaced. :-& That's the #4 exhaust cam lobe, knarly. :|

Bad sign on the sides?

Bad sign on the sides?

what would cause that, a stuck, or sticking valve?
Oil starvation during high revs, due to poor maintenance.
The bike has scuff marks on both sides, plus a lot of small stuff missing, so I have to figure it was owned and abused by a meathead.
Don't pay good money for an abused bike, like I did. :|
I just bought some used camshafts on ebay, and a new cam follower. I think the bike will run real good after I get those in.

Hey Buffalo Bill........good to see you found your engine knock issue. Although that camshaft looks rough it could certainly be a lot worse for sure.
As well, I don't think you got a bad deal on your Katana. That engine does not have many miles on it so it will still have lots of life in it once you get the camshaft replaced.
Once you have it going you'll have a very good bike for the money you spent.
Like I said before..........Suzuki usually designs and builds strong and long lived engines.
It'll look after you.

Two week wait?

Two week wait?

Hey I got the last little part, $45 for this?
Can you guess which is the new part?
I replaced both intake and exhaust cams with salvaged cams, because even the original intake cam had pits on the lobes.
Should have the bike on the road by Saturday afternoon.

Great thread, makes me pine for another one.

I put 50,000 miles on one of these back in the day. '89 GSX750F. I road it hard but took good care of it. I drag raced it best was (11.22), triple digit runs to Vegas, went to Mexico on it, had plenty of mountain sport riding along with years of commuting. This bike still lives today at my bother in laws house...

Oops?waitin' for more parts?

Oops?waitin' for more parts?

Seems I was too hasty and spoil't some carb seals, found out just as I was adding some gas for the first start up. Carbs started to leak an' I din't want a Bar-B Q'd Kat in da garage. Another week waitin for dem parts?
Meantime these came in da mail. I'm an old man an I get carpel numbness easy. So I put gel grips on and bought some end weights off one of dose Hiyababy's. These are full of LED, an just as heavy as LED ZEPPELIN I.
See here, da big Hiyababy's on the left, stock in the middle, and da little one's what some squid put on dere.

Had time today!

Had time today!

After working for food and shelter all week,
I had time to assemble the bike and start it up. Smoky and noisy? Oops, forgot to tighten up the exhaust clamps at the engine. Started up and ran great and I synch'ed the carbs!
Can't ride it yet, I got a sticky new radial rear tire: Bridgestone Battlax BT016 150/60-17. The standard rear rim for the '93 is only 3.5" and is meant for bias-ply tires. This radial is molded for a 4.5" rim. I got a newer Katana rim off a '97 that's 4.5" wide. It should bolt right in, just waiting for it to be delivered come Wednesday.

Goal fixation?

Goal fixation?

Oops! I should have seen this coming. The rotor bolt pattern changes after '97. I gotta buy a post '98 rotor. Bummer, I thought I could use the one I had. I bolted up the wheel anyway but I can't do a safe road test without a rear brake. But the wheel and tire fit just fine!

Nice

Looking good Bill!

Let's just hope there are no more "Oops, I need xxx part." moments!

Stellar job so far, could we perhaps see a video of the beast in action when it's done?

No video camera?

No video camera?

Thanks Macguyver! No video camera in the house at this time.
The rain stopped, so I took a short ride up and back on the local hiway. Sounds real mean!
I didn't like riding on wet pavement without a rear brake, so will wait for it to dry. I did some low speed circles in a nearby parking lot and that felt good. I'm not used to this bike yet so, I will take it slow.
I'm going to have to paint this bike soon, but not today.
I have a used rotor ordered already, only $39 with shipping! That's way better than $160 - $200 for new!

$39 with shipping? Wow, that is a deal and a half!

So, what color are your planning for the bodywork?
