Thanks to all you guys at this site my GS850G bike has come back to life, best site ever thanks for all your help, here are the final questions.

1. First problem backing firing, Noticed smoke comming out of #2 exhaust from the head, removed pipes and installed new rings but in the process broke a bolt, anyone have suggestion of how to get it out, and could the air leak have caused back firing?

2. second, just install new dyna S and coils, when I started smells like gas realy bad and lots of black smoke any thoughts?

3. Last does anyone know were I can get a Carb rebuild kit?

Thanks.

So, when fitting the Dyna S on your ’82, you installed a mechanical advance from an earlier 850?

Regarding the carbs, there is a nice rebuild series on GSR homepage. You don’t need rebuild kits per say but you need an O-ring kit (available from cycleorings.com), intake boot O-rings (cycleorings.com), and maybe floatbowl gaskets and pilot jet plugs (z1enterprises.com)

my bike had this advance already(pic attached), based on earlier feedback I figured this was a Mechanical advance

If you have a vacuum petcock and the vacuum line runs to carb #2 I'd be looking for a holed or torn diaphram in the petcock. Pull the vacuum line off at the carb and suck on it carefully to see if it holds vacuum or leaks down. You may see signs of fuel in the line without sucking. If its's leaking you're getting lots of extra fuel to that cylinder and it will flow even with the bike off. You may have already checked this. Just trying to cover the bases.

That?s a mechanical advance all right, very strange that your bike would have one. My ?82 850 has an electronic advance system. What is the manufacturing date, month/year, of your bike? Trying to understand why my bike is different.

Does the bike have a Dyna ignition?

Bikes with the electronic advance have a large Ignitor box. Bikes with electronic ignition, but mechanical advance, have a ignitor about half as large.
If I had read closer I'd have seen he has the Dyna S. He may have a combination of timing, petcock, and carb woes. I'm thinking petcock is his main problem as well as carbs needing to be rebuilt. Your advice on carb parts should help him tons.

recently bought bike form towing yard, when I bought 2,3 were not firing, I figured it was coils but after recieving clymers CDI TESTED bad. After buying used from Ebay twice and still no go, I found your site and read all the past threads, dyna S mentioned so much I thought I give it a try. Make a long story short bike had all kinds of rigs, would not doubt if not original ignition, I know CDI did not look original. Mfg. plate badly worn all I can make out is 1982 GS850G. I have already changed petcock with new, old would not shut off. As for timing I did not know this bike needed a timing adjustment, unless I did not install dyna S correctly? As for carbs new boots ordered, I did buy the new rings and stainless steel bolts from Robert Barr found on this site, I was going to rebuild carbs but with this new advice I do as you guys suggest. I am new to this working on bikes yourself stuff, but had no choice no body here if Fresno Cal. would work on it besides you guys seem to be better then those flakes anyhow. Thanks for all the advice I will check these areas look forward to any other advice you guys can give out thanks.

Make sure you check the petcock out. A hole in the diaphram allows fuel to run down the vacuum line, into the carb, down the intake, and into the cylinder and on into the crankcase. You might want to see if the oil smells like gas through the filler or if the oil level has risen.

petcock

petcock

new, bike was modified, all lines tied off together, as for tank line from petcock is connected to inlet on tank.
