    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

A grounding question involving the electrosport r/r

i have an electrosport r/r. With this r/r, the current flow is shunted to ground.

So my question is, with this r/r, is it still a good idea to run a wire direct from the battery(-) to the r/r(-) or is this not recommended with this r/r (potential to fry the battery??)??. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Yes, it helps the R/R "see" the battery better, so system voltage is controlled. It's not your battery that will fry - the stator will be going full tilt as the shunt R/R dumps excess to ground. I bet you saw all those posts about series units!
 
I have tended to not belabor the point, but the common folklore about shunting to ground is not very accurate. Current runs in circuits and in not dumped like into a rain barrel. When shunting two legs of the stator are shorted by the r/r which causes a lot of current to flow out one stator leg through the short in the r/r and back into the other stator leg. It runs in a circuit through two legs. All shunt r/rs do this, so the concept of shunt to ground is not accurate especially if you think the battery (-) is where the current is going

Yes. Is good to add your ouwn additional ground wire from the R/R ground to frame ground or battery neg.

For 2 reasons:
1) stock wiring the r/r ground wire is connected to the battery box (starter solenoid mounting bolt), and battery box may not be well grounded to bike frame.
2) because of #1, the stock wiring has a ground wire (black/white) that comes through the wiring harness and is connected to this same place to better ground the battery box and the R/R. Sometimes this wire still doesn't provide a good ground. And, even if it does, sometimes in some circumstances if the R/R fails in a certain way it can run a lot of amps down that wire to where it is melting and it melts the insulation off other wires in the harness >>Big Mess<<.
So, yes, add your own ground wire from where the R/R is grounded (solenoid mounting bolt) to bike frame or batt negative. THis is so you know the R/R is well grounded (like lots of folks say), and so if R/R fails it doesn't have as much of a chance to melt entire wiring harness (my theory).


Also: add your bike model/year to sig line. And maybe your location to profile. THen both of those show up in every posting and we know what bike you are talking about. And maybe someone local to you can help you out.
