A trip through Detroit's east side

Was it down by I wanna say somewhere between 12 & 13. Did he use to have a lot of the old 50's style cars there in the flat black primer with like the saucer rims? If its the shop I am thinking of a friend of my use to help him do some posters for like band shows and stuff on the side.

We are talking about the same place. which makes me think that we probably know some of the same people. Jeff still does a lot of concert posters.

Thats cool , yeah shows you how small the world really is. Yeah my friends name was Mark I think Jeff did the Rat fink type characters (accept they where frankenstein and the bride of franenstein but in hot rods like ratt fink)tatts on his legs. Been years since I have seen or talked to him though. I would like to get in touch with him again we use to jam in a band together. But that is cool small world ain't it.

Ahhh, Detroit. The only city where I've sat at a traffic light when both red and green lights were lit. Of course I'm a metro person and I learn to live with that. I believe we noticed something strange once the light went from green to red green.

I wouldn't really classify myself as a Detroiter though. I've driven 8 mile many times, watched the movie thought it was cheese. I've worked downtown a bit but I still get horribly lost, my only metric is the sun.

Here is a house that intrigued me, so I had to snap a couple pics of it. I later found out that it belongs to a friend of a friend, and the entire house is covered in metal. Including the roof, which has metal tiles (I didn?t get a good pic of that). Supposedly the theme is included inside. It is now my goal to get in there.

I can shed some light on the steel home. They are called 'Lustron Homes' The tiny houses, a post-World War II effort to provide affordable homes, were prefabricated of porcelain-enamel coated steel from 1948 through 1950 by Lustron Corp. of Ohio. The company built about 2,500 of the houses, which are scattered around the country. The houses were never a commercial success, but a cult grew up around them. There are quite a few of them in Lombard, Illinois where I live. I believe they were constructed of steel inside and out. Here's a link to a Washington Post article about the homes: Lustron Article
I did a Google search for "Lustron Home" and got 120,000 hits so you will easily be able to find info on these homes.

Thanks,
Joe

Back when I was learning to get around the city I used the river as my touchstone. Look for the RenCen (now GM) and you can follow the river back to my hometown.

Joe, thanks for the info on the metal house. It made for fascinating (as well as an excellent time wasting) read. I don't know how I've never heard of these before.

beergood: my wife and i came to detroit to pick up ags850 that had rearended a car, we went to the ford museum while there, it was great. thanks for the nice story and photos. iazuki

Great job Beergood! I spent a few of my growing up years in the downriver area. Allen/lincoln park. Still have some family there but they are dying off fast. We moved to rural west mich. in '73 and never looked back. How sad to see the way things have gotten there. I have to agree that Detroit is too far gone. No jobs, and the tax base is disappearing fast. The state even had to step in and run the school system it was so bad. Some of those pics. you would swear were from Berlin after ww2. Thanks.

Thanks for posting that. A very good read and pictorial.

I lived in Warren at 14 mile and Mound. Not bad at all there, but a bit shady. Now I live up in Shelby, no problems there...

It's a damn shame what happened to Detroit. The thing that scares me is that it's only gonna get worse!

Cheers

Shelby?, I work in romeo, and used to live in sterling hgts, just around the block...

Sounds like I should know you

Sounds like I should know you

Beergood - I grew up on the 1300 block of Nottingham. Went to St Ambrose - then Austin for almost 1.1 years (punched back a priest) - Grosse Pointe South. If you have ever gone to the Rustic Cabins on Kercheval, you have been drinking with a Conlan. Nice pictures - I like your style. Actually stopping in those areas is great. It always reminds me of Omega Man movie. My dad owned the Globe Theatre on Grand River and Trumbel. As a kid my dad (being fed up with me) would put $10.00 in my little hand and point me to the Trumbel bus headed toward Michigan Ave. I could see the Tigers (bleacher) get a hot dog, pop, ice cream, and round trip on the bus. Most my friends dont go into Detroit unless to pay fines (wimps). You just have to know how to handle yourself - look em in the eye - DONT STARE - dont look away - If you look like a victim ......
I like going to Detroit - I also like local history. I would really like to get together for a ride - I ride year round. Hockeytown Cafe allows motorcycle parking on its patio (free). My work e-mail is : sconlan1@ach-llc.com. Hope to hear from you. Steve
PS- Fountain on Belle Isle is the Scott Fountain. Scott was a old (late 1800 - early 1900) slum landlord. Everyone hated him. He owned most of downtown Detroit in his day. He had no family. In his will he wanted a statue of himself larger than Hazen Pingree (ex mayor and I think ex govenor). City didnt like the idea - banked his money for 20 years then decided on a fountain. He did get his statue - it's not as big as he wanted it. Its in you pic - he has his back to you - he is in a chair.

I grew up at 1375 Nottingham. Small world. When did you graduate from South?

I have had the occasional drink at Rustic. My first job was as a clean up kid at the Tap Room, and that has been my local watering hole ever since.

Oh - Spooky

Oh - Spooky

I grew up at 1357 Nottingham - howdy neighbor. SHOULD have graduated south 1972. Didnt and got GED because puplic schools dont recognize latin and religion. Miss Campbell wanted me to go a 5th year. NOT. My wifes sister lives in (I think) 1358 Nottingham. I moved from my moms house in 1973 at age 19. I flipped when I saw Angel park in your pics. Is that Doug Hazebrooks(spelling??) house ? I have a couzin that live on Alter below Jeff - his house has the perminant volleyball net in his front yard along with the 2 picnic tables. He has 3 lots - and has full contact croquet torneys for BIG money(not my sport). I am a bit of a local historian - if I can answer any questions let me know. So where you living now ? I am about 10 & 1/2 & Jefferson.

Indeed it was the Hazebrook's house. I don't know how well you knew the family, but Doug recently passed away. I used to work with DJ at the Tap Room, and a whole bunch of us used to go sailing on the family's boat (Soma) that they kept on harbor island. DJ is in the Coast Guard in New Orleans, Mary Jo is in Alabama, Joe still lives around here.

I currently live on Wayburn. I have spent the last ten years bouncing around the Cabbage Patch area.

We should definitely get together for a cruise downtown.

Its a small world after all

Its a small world after all

Didnt really know the Hazebrooks - always saw the large sailboat when at Angel - some of my friends had "dealings" with Doug. Dare I ask how he passed? I have a couzin that live on Wayburn and also one on Maryland. When did you grad south ? I just ate at Janets Lunch last night. This weekend is suppose to be warm - I feel the need for coneys - or maybe a stop at Nemo's. If weather holds today I might ride your way. Can you give me a # and does it say "beergood" on the mailbox. I would be coming that way anyway - to visit a friend on Beaconsfield at Kercheval.
