After market fuel valves suck

Okay bit of a rant here. I just bought a replacement fuel valve from Z-1 for my 81 gs1000G. The screen filter wont fit in the tank, it is .o40 too wide at it's widest point. so the tech at Z-1 says just take it off and use an inline filter, so no problem I just won't have a reserve function. I can live with that since my bike has a fuel gauge. but the damn fuel outlet and vacume outlet face the wrong way! and the vacume outlet is right infront of the frame tube! the one thing that work are the bolt holes which are 44 mm apart. the only part that makes it work on a suziki. and to make matters worse everyothere site that sells vacume valves, sells the same brand and model!!!!!

got so mad i had to stop working on it for the evening..

Did you purchase the correct petcock for your bike?

I bought one from z1 for my 750L and it fit without a problem. To have so many fitment problems leads me to believe its not the right petcock.

I've looked around. by the pictures, no one sell the right petcock. I mean, they can't not know about this issue. sort of "what are you going to do about it". I guess I could go to the dealer but the last time I checked a price (on a valve adjustment tool) the dealer wanted 130 dollars more that on line (I kid you not) I got the wrench for 18 bucks versus 148 from the dealer here in olympia. I was afraid to even ask what the petcock would cost

I had similar issues when I bought one a few years back. Mine came packaged with the screen all crumpled in the box. It was torn where it had been kinked so I used the factory screen IIRC. Any way I had fitment probs too. I ended up buying Suzuki oem, $90 I think.

I went through the same thing on my 1978 550. The petcock fit in the tank but the vacuum tube hit the frame.

You can take the 4 screws out of the petcock and split the petcock in half and turn the vacuum port 180 degrees and it works perfect. Just be carefull not to damage the membrane in the petcock.

I had to reroute the gas line abit but I like the set up better because it is easier to accsess the fuel lines now.

I know they are crappy pics but this is what it looked like before the I turned the vacuum port. You can kind of see the vacuum port hitting the frame.

Cycle Parts Nation and Part Shark are two of the cheaper OE parts sources. Beats paying dealership prices as long as you are not in a big hurry. Regarding making the filter tube fit in the tank, a few strokes of a file should fix that problem. And yes on rotating the back plate on the petcock to accommodate your application.
