Air Box Compatibility

What models Air box will be compatible with my 1980 GS1000G, I have been looking at part numbers and searching fleabay. The factory air boxes seem to have multiple model numbers so I do not want to buy one that wont fit, Will an 850G airbox work? they can be had for quite a bit less than the 1000G or the 1100G. Thanks guys, I was toying with the Idea of pods but i want to get the bike running correctly before i do any other modifications.

Sorry, but your search is pretty much limited to the '80 and '81 1000G.

The 850 box looks like it will work, but the tubes to the carbs are a different diameter.

By the part numbers, Steve is correct. By my own experience, the openings for the tubes are different. I once used a set of shrunken 1000G pipes on my 850GL. The fit was good enough, but I did replace them later. In the 1000G, they were loose and very leaky. As in, I could see into the airbox. So, if you put an 850 airbox into a 1000G, you won't get full flow, no matter which pipes you put in. I suppose you could open the holes up a bit...

I see an eBay seller listing by the part number (13700-45050, superseded by 13700-45051), who claims they interchange. No pics.

Hmmm. The spare I have in the garage is stamped from the factory for 750, 850 and 1000, just like the one in the thread linked in post #5. I never did actually measure the holes in the two airboxes.

I actually have a 850 box on my 80 1000g and just got new pipes, part # already posted . It has been on the bike for 8 years and fits perfectly. With the 850 tubes they don't fit the 34 carbs well. And as far as not getting enough air I am running stock exhaust and 122.5 main jets so air is not a problem considering the lean condition that the stock 115 mains present

Is this going to be a street, all-weather, touring bike? Find an airbox. This one linked above has the snorkel, and is marked for the 1000G. The rest can be found or bought new.

Whatever airbox you find, make sure to clear the rust out of crankcase breather inlet. It can be blocked completely.

Going to revive this thread for a moment. I recently purchased a 1980 GS1000L for $500. PO is deceased and I bought it from his niece. No air box, just pods. I haven't tried to start it yet as I just got a battery for it and am working on a 1978 GS750 I picked up for $400 that I'm excited about. Getting back to the L, it has pods. PO deceased, so I can't ask if jets were changed. I want to try to get it back to stock, if possible and want to find an air box. I'm trying to determine which models are compatible. It appears from prior comments, that '79-'81 will work, but is that only for G models? Do I have to specifically get L air boxes? And finally, do you think I should just fit the pods on it and see how it runs first before expending money. My plans are to flip this bike. Thanks in advance!
