    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Air filter box...Foam?

Hi,
When I got my Gs750 there was a piece of soft black foam under the air filter box lid. Cut to shape and size of the hole, and I could just lift it out to get at the filter.
I figured after looking at my service manual that it shouldnt be there, so I took it out and dumped it.

Anyone have any ideas why the last owner would have done this? And should I have left it in there?

Also, an online friend told me when he fitted a Vance & hines exhaust to his 750 he left the lid off altogether and re-jetting the carbs. I guess this is the norm when fitting an after market system, as this guy knows his GSs.....

Maybe he was thinking it would work as a prefilter and/or soak up water- who knows? Assuming you have correct filter element installed, I would have dumped it too. I can't help with your exhaust question, but someone else will.
 
The air box has to have as tight a seal as you can get, otherwise you get too much air and it throws everything off. Over the years the OEM rubber seals either rot out or simply get lost and guys replace them with pieces of foam. I'm not familiar with a 750 air box, but my 850 has covers on both sides. It had rubber gaskets on each side but they're long gone. I used 3/8" foam strips (weather stripping) around the inside edges of each cover and sealed it tight as a drum. A $3 fix and she runs great!!

The 750 airbox has the rubber seals as well..but you will notice that the seal blocks off the top half of the opening. I think this is so the air is directed under the filter cage and sucked thru the fliter to ensure maximun filtration. The weather stripping will seal the rim of the cover but it wont seat the upper half off like originally designed..and the dealership still has the foam rewashable filters for on the 750 racks too. Wash and a spray of the K&N filter oil and your good to go.

Thanks guys,

I might try a bit of sticky backed weather seal for fun, as its easy to remove again. My bike starts and runs fine, but I keep thinking of that block of foam! Could it have been helping the bike even more? So weather seal is worth a shot to see what happens!:)
 
Put an add in the parts wanted section and see if anyone has a good complete airbox you can strip for parts or at least a set of the OEM seals..cant cost very much either way..just my opinion.
