If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I have a 79 gs 1000 that didnt have an air filter or even the air filter box when i bought it. I was wondering if anyone has clapped a pod style filter to the end of the air box that goes from 4 into 1 big opening that normally goes into the filter box? If any one has done this, how does is work and what size does the flange opening need to be to work properly? Thanks in advance to all help. :)

I know of at least one person that has done it. Scotty, http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/member.php?u=600, is the guy and should be able to answer your questions. Drop him a PM since he doesn't frequent the site much anymore.

From what i can gather, the regular foam air filter is held in place in the air filter box by a metal piece. The bike didnt come with the filter box hust the 4 to 1 box right behind the carbs. I was wanting to put it back to orginal but cant find the filter box at a reasonable price. So that is why i am thinking of buying a k+n or uni reusable style clamp on air filter to put on the end of the 4 to 1 air box at the rear of the carbs.
I am trying to also find out if anyone on here has tried this and if so is it more or less tempermental that the individual pods on each carb? I would like to know what part number or what exact measurements on the flange opening.

I know for a fact it's been done with good results. PM Scotty for info.

I just got back from the garage measuring for this same question. I came up with a K&N RU 1830 for a single filter to clamp onto the OEM airbox. I need to recheck my measurements, but did anybody ever get an answer from someone who has actually done this? Shouldn't it provide the benifits of the volume of the airbox and the added airflow of the K&N over the stock filter? Best of both worlds.

My 1979 GS 1000 came with pods, headers, and a Stage III Dynojet kit. I bought an airbox, with a filterbox, and a K&N replacement filter that goes in the filterbox, thinking about just running the filter open and attached to the airbox (which has rubber velocity stacks inside). If the Dynojet Stage III wasn't already here, I was planning on going with a Stage I or Stage II, then jetting for that arrangement with the header. I figured this setup would introduce some consistency in temperature and humidity of the air feeding the carbs. I look forward to whatever advice Scotty might have for you, and will keep a keen eye on this thread.

The flange OD is 2.250". What you're doing was once a very popular solution to the problem of increased flow and an alternative to using the individual K&N filters. i will do this as well since I too only have the forward half of the airbox. I'm also considering building a shunt to block debris from accumulating under the seat and gunking up the filter.

For now I have given up on the plans for 1 big filter. I recently bought air filter and complete box assembly for 25 bucks. I will eventually do this mod, but for now i am going to focus on getting the old girl back up to road worthyness. Thanks for all help. I will be posting about it after I have gotten a few other more pressing issues out of the way.
