    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey,

On these GS750's/850's.....when you buy a new air filter, does it come with the litle metal bracket that surrounds the filter?

I've always re-used the washable foam filter that was in my bike when I bought it. But now, the foam-like gasket on the top of the metal bracket is flaking off everywhere - which leaves a significant gap for unfiltered air to go through

Then why in the world do they want to charge thirty-something bucks for just the air filter itself? I called up and spoke with someone at ronayers.com, ........that is what they are charging. I also asked if this was just the filter alone, or with the filter bracket.....the guy was unsure.

LOL, I would think that you could almost get the whole dang airbox for the 37 or 38 dollars that they quoted........... :lol: :lol: :lol:

I had the same problem. I solved it by removing the old foam and applying new foam, the type used on windows, to prevent draught. Don't know the English term :oops: , but I think you'll get the picture... :D

$ 38 seems to be a lot of money for just a piece of foam. Because that is what you get when you order an air filter. I would try to find a cheaper place..... :roll:

"Draft".....that's what you mean (Durchzug). OK, guess I can try that. Thought about doing it myself already, but just wasn't too sure how the stuff would hold, because of my using the "oiled" foam filter......

That looks about like the one I've been using........and I'm totally satisfied with it too. I've washed mine 3 times so far........the thing seems to take a beating.

But I'm more concerned about the bracket. Like I said, without that foam layer, to act as a gasket, there's quite a gap that is left for unfiltered air to go through. I'm going to try your suggestion with the adhesive foam strips......but the only thing I'm a little worried about is the oil. Because I am using the oiled foam filter, the entire innard of the airbox seems to be constantly coated in oil. I'll clean off the bracket good first.....with brake cleaner, or something similar to get all that oil off and get a good adhesive surface.

I just don't want the foam strip to eventually come off, and get sucked into the carbs. That would be an ugly mess..... :roll: :roll: :roll:

I had the same problem and used the suggested solution years ago. Bought the sticky-sided foam tape at Home Depot, cleaned the metal real good (brake cleaner ought to work fine), and cut and installed the foam tape. I wish I could remember the thickness I used; I think it was 1/4 inch. And I thinik the width was somewhere around 3/4 inch or 1 inch. Measure what little you have left before buying it. It has worked well.

Ron, I had the same problem with my 750. There was a gap between the metal top of the filter and the airbox. I took two old mouse pads, cut them to make a gasket and contact cemented them in place. That was over a year ago and everything is still fine. Old mouse pads.......cost =zero. :-) :-) :-)

I have an 850, and had the same problem too. I found that you can get a Uni-filter for the bike for $15 (US). I used foam that came with an old helmet for the top of the air filer. The foam was sticky on one side (it was meant to be put inside the helmet to "adjust" the size) and cut it to fit. K&N might sell the complete assembly, as I don't see how their filter could work any other way.
 
for $38 bucks, they better give you the metal piece!!!! I got mine from J.C. Whitney, $15, used the 1/4 inch high, 1/2 inch width door foam available at Wally-world or any home Depot type place. worked great. I did get some brake parts cleaner and got ALL teh oil off the metal pat before I stuck the foam down. Been working for 2 years now. try another palce for that foam filter! :twisted:
 
I also have used the door foam on my 850. I did it about 2 years ago and have no problem with it. For once, a cheap fix that actually works.

Jojo, I don't know the English term, either, but I think the Dutch or German term is "Draftenstoppenwindaustikkenfaum" :roll:

Thanks to all who answered here, I'll be trying the Drafenstoppenwindaustikkenfaum idea. I appreciate all y'alls help in this matter. Don't really want to do the thing with mousepads......might have some animal rights group after my a$$. :wink: :wink:

1.
I have used the draft excluder foam on my GS with no worries. And even if it did come loose it wouldn't float into the motor before I noticed it as it is squashed between the filter and the box.

2.
The oil from the filter should not spray around the inside of your filter box. Perhaps the oil is coming from the crankcase vent tube and your rings need attention. You have a choice in what oil to use, either motor oil, heavier gearbox oil, or even heavier air filter oil from the specialists like K&N etc. Only apply enough to moisten the foam, not enough to drip out. I have found the best way is to put the filter into a plastic bag, pour in the right amount of oil, and give the thing a massage for about ten to twenty minutes to distribute the oil eveny.

3.
The Suzie parts list here in Oz has the filter in two part numbers. One has both foam and metal frame, the second is the foam only. They only sell the frame here with the foam, probably the same elsewhere.

Not quite: I think it should be "Selbstklebendesdraftenstoppenwindaustikkenfaum". You wouldn't like to end up with "Nichtselbstklebendesdraftenstoppenwindaustikkenfaum", would you? :lol: :lol:
 
Yep. If the airbox is oily, most likely the foam is way too saturated...unless...if the crankcase vents into the airbox, it could be coming from that?
