Still waiting on the clymers for my 82 750t but this sight has helped immensely. i was thinking of going with individual filter pods (look cool and seem easier to clean) but don't read a lot of positives on here about them and then there seems to be all the rejetting issues to deal with. So took things apart today to play and see what the filter looks like. I have the four carbs going into the airbox?? I think. Out the other side at the top I just have a big hole exiting the box. I look in the box it appears empty! Should there be a filter attached here some where. Under the seat there is just a tray for the tool bag and it seems to butt right up against this hole. What the heck?? Also is there something that should be in the airbox itself??? Now I am wandering since the carbs are essentially free flowing with no filter should I go with the pods anyway? Maybe even go with velocity stacks any issues there??? Just wandering ???

How's the bike running now??

If I were you, I'd avoid the pods or the stacks and replace the original filter/airbox assembly. If you are going to install a new 4 into 1 exhaust, you can change the setup then. If you want to leave it stock, pods will just have you eternally frustrated :?

Your stock airbox sounds like it's missing a few parts - mainly the filter, which does live inside the box - and yes, it is a large cylinder - sounds like your missing the cap to the air box as well. Look on Ebay - just saw the whole set-up listed last week. 8)

Not really sure of how it runs yet! I will say the guy I bought it from rode it about 30-40 miles to meet me at a title business so it did run. But I have it apart because it needed a couple of gaskets and a new tank /petcock the other leaked fuel like crazy and I really haven't started because I know on the 5 hour drive back home it ran gas into the crank case. I figure I am missing the whole filter assembly because a filter surely doesn't fit into the tray that is under there now. I will continue to keep my eye out for one on ebay.

For fun one day, I decided to pull the top cover off my air box to open it up a bit. So all I was running was my stock filter (with no cover) and my stock pipes. Bike ran fine except up till about half throttle or when going up a hill. Then the bike hesitated and felt like it lost power. It was running lean. As soon as I put my air box cover back on, it ran perfectly through the hole throttle.
If I were you, I would put a stock air filter in you air box, or a K+N drop in filter at the least. Then check that it runs good through the whole throttle. It is possible that the previous owner jetted the bike to run without any air filter in it at all. This would allow it to suck in dirt and warrant getting a rebuild done on the top and bottom end. How is the compression?

I think he has a 2 piece airbox with the filter in the second piece (after it squeezes throught the frame). Those airfilter-holding pieces are quite common - I think I have a couple sitting around.
