So I intend to use this thread not only for photos and initial impressions but also as a place to accumulate a long term review of these air filters. I know that several of our members are against pods completely, and those that aren't are against cheaper alternatives based on the get what you pay for principle. Awhile back, I was contemplating pods for my 11e, as it already has a 4:1, and was doing my usual search of eBay and Amazon for initial options and happened to stumble across these guys. http://www.ebay.com/itm/391038192566?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT You can find them by searching 54mm (or 52mm) oval air filters. I was intrigued due to the fact that aesthetically they are very similar to the K&N's and the APE's. And at $26 they appeared to be a bargain, keeping in mind that you get what you pay for. So May 1st I bit the bullet and placed an order with the seller in the link, since he is very local to me, and basically forgot about it due to sports for my son etc. Came home today to a package.

Size wise, they are dead on with the other pods that I own for my other bikes, a review of which can be found in my build thread. They share in common with the K&N's the rib on the mounting boot that helps positively locate the clamp, which I appreciate.

Also like the K&N's, the top cap is stamped with their logo and is chrome plated (these are the only filters I have that the bottom cap is also chrome plated).

The second picture also shows the inside of the filter, which looks spot on for what you'd expect. I'm not a fan of chrome, nor the stamped logo, but that is purely aesthetic. My first overall impression is generally positive. The overall construction seems to be on par with the other manufacturers. The boots are nice, supple rubber. The clamps are Taiwan made, which I think about all of them are anymore. The major difference I see is the filtration media. On the other two filters, the wire mesh is much finer. On the Alpha Moto's, they use a heavier gauge, chrome plated wire mesh. From my viewpoint this appears to serve only aesthetics and not so much function. An obligatory squeeze test confirms that the Alpha's filtration media is stiffer I guess you'd call it due to the heavier screen. The filtration media so far as I can tell is much the same as found on the other filters. It's hard to tell due to the screen.

The initial testing will be done on the 850 as it already has pods and the obligatory jet kit installed and ready to go and is a known quantity as far as performance and on-road behavior is concerned. I'm going to oil the Alpha's later this evening then install them and take the 850 to work tomorrow morning (supposed to be 50F) and take it for a quick jaunt after work (75F forecast) to see if the bike feels/acts any different. Stay tuned.

Post install thoughts. So after a thorough side by side look, I notice 3 things. First, for those with bs32ss carbs, get the 52mm, as the 54mm is a bit big and needs the clamp tightened down a good bit. On the bs34ss carbs on the 11e they fit perfectly. Secondly, and this is the biggie for me, is I now realize why the other brands don't have chrome bottom caps. The other two brands I own have the mounting boot molded into the bottom of the filter base. These new filters are a mere friction fit between the rubber boot and the bottom plate. This will more than likely result in future air leaks if not addressed with some sealant or other method. Another detriment to this joining method is it creates a bottleneck from the filter into the inlet of the carb. You can see the step in the rubber boot in the pic of the inside. That is what will cause the bottleneck. The final bit I see is the width of the filter is the same, but the height is about 1/2" to 3/4" shorter than the APE or the K&N. Currently I don't think these are going to work for me in the long run as the potential air leaks and bottleneck construction are going to be insurmountable issues considering these were purchased for the 11e. Again, these were bought knowing full well they were cheap and the overall quality is good but the construction methods are the issue. If nothing else I will have a supply of air filters for my quads etc.

I'm not sure if you were able to conclude whether the AFR changed after the install of these v.s. what you had on before? In other words do they flow comparably to the K&N or APE's which are apparently very close. They seem to be a foam element, so I'm not sure if that filters as well as the other either.

I haven't ridden it yet Pos. Will be taking it out in the morning.

As can be seen in this pic of the APE and K&N side by side you can see the lip that I'm concerned will cause restriction of airflow. If it does create restriction based on my observations in the past it will make the bike run richer overall. Time will tell.

look inside.........they are necked down......
you get what you pay for.
these remind me of the emgo chrome cones.
compare these to the emgo crappers in the inlet area...they look the same.

So after riding to and from work today I didn't feel any adverse effects from the filters. I'm going to keep them on and do some plug chops ths weekend to see how the fueling looks.

the 8 valves don't seem to care near as much.
large 16 valve engines hate them as the power difference and the air moved is quite large.

The APE's weren't oiled in that photo and the K&N's weren't squeaky clean so that could be a why the media looks as different as it does, not to mention relationship to the light source. I can post a current pic later today of how they look in comparison now.
