A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'm going to be getting my GS400 back together again soon(-ish) and wondered if there's any mileage in replacing the standard points system with an electronic ignition?

In my opinion it is one of the best mods you can make to any bike. Well worth the cost and time in doing so. Absolutely. Go for it.

It would be a good upgrade if you can find one---- The points are very reliable so I wouldn't worry about it JUst clean and adj every 5K miles

Cheers for the info people.

Next question:

I'm not keen on not being able to change the HT leads on the standard coils. Has anyone tried other coils on the GS400?

To KW: I've got a spare front wheel for a 425 at the back of my garage. What do you think it would be worth on eBay?

No idea mate - best bet would be just to stick it on there and see what happens!

Old GS wheels usually don't bring much It costs alot to ship them $$$$$$

Hey KW.........That site of yours looks promising!!!!
As for the GS wheels......They dont reach much on ebay.

anyone got an opinion on which is the best electronic ignition; Newtronics or Boyer Bransden or something else?

Q

Hey.....this is beginning to get a U.K only thread!!! Sorry...only used the original suzi. ignition, but everyone seems to rave about the `newtronic`!

It'll get better once "her who must be obeyed" stops giving me jobs around the house to do!! Just found a good deal on HEL braided lines so these will be going on there soon too.

Never tried the Boyer Ignition, but I am very pleased with the Newtronic one I fitted to my 750. About 2 hours (including a coffee and fag break), and it cured the major misfire I had at around 6500 rpm.

Hey.... what's going on???? Why the hashes in my posting? Does this site have a downer on smoking? Or does the word f.a.g. not mean cigarette over there??

I wonder if people from that corner of Lincolnshire called Scunthorpe will be allowed to post on here?

F ag is slang for a homosexual over here.
I have a 78 GS425, I still have the points on it.

I use a newtronic ignition, very good (I am non US or UK), plus you get local backup. I recently had a coil go, which took part of the ignition with it. I was able to, after asking the very helpful tech at newtronics, to fix it for less than $10. The newtronics are the same as the old piranas, so have been proven for many years.

Did you replace with the same or did you find an alternative?

I've found out that the CB500 coil has similar spec as the GS400

I worked in Indiana a couple of years ago - I wondered why they looked at me funny when I said "I'm just nipping outside for a quick f ag"! #-o

I got a Electronic Ignition kit from Newtronic Systems LTD, for my GS425. It is a really nice kit and I am going to write a full review of it for my website. It is a plug in unit that works with the factory ignition coils. Very nice setup including evertthing that you need to install.

Here is a link to Newtronic Systems LTD:
http://www.newtronic.co.uk/

With their SU-3 Contactless Ignition Kit i will never mess with the points again.
