    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Alternator case gasket?

I was replacing the gasket on my alternator case and I was wondering if I should use an RTV silicon on that gasket.

Don't use silicon on your bike. I just use and reuse good gaskets until they're toast, then I buy new ones.
 
I spent most of the day today replacing my stator; by far the hardest part has been dealing with the #$%^& cover. Very difficult to get off--finally got an impact driver, a great tool. Then the old gasket was baked onto the surface in many places; I wasn't sure how clean it needed to be, and should have waited and asked. I thought it was pretty good, but when I started it up it leaked like a sieve. So, drain the oil again, take it off, scrape more off. Then the new gasket got caught in the gears and ripped. I didn't want to wait several more days, so I thought I'd give it a try. I got it down to a very slight drip, which still ticks me off, but I don't know what to do.

The new stator works great, though! I just had no idea it would be so difficult. I've ordered a new gasket, so any suggestions about making this go more smoothly would be much appreciated.

Oh, man....I just went throught the same stuff for the last couple of days. I asked for help, every step of the way, and got some wonderful advice from all the smart guys out there. My stator cover is on and everything is perfect. I also had a horrid leak yesterday which I thought odd considering how careful I was.

Do a search for "stator gasket replacement".....things like that, in combination, and you'll learn everything you ever will need to know.

As a matter of fact, just look at my own posts for the last several days and you'll learn a great deal based on the help I've received from the experts on this forum......

Where a gasket was not available, I have used the silicone with little problem.

(made the gasket from a cereal box :) )

Smooth it on with a finger tip so that you get a thin, even, coating and then let it set for an hour or more before installing.
