    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello, I am in the process of putting an 1100 swingarm on my 1978 GS1000. I plan on using the rear wheel from a 1994 GSXR750. Here is the progress so far:

Removed the swingarm from the GS1000:

and I did a cheap rattle can paint job on the aluminum 1100 swingarm:

I have a couple questions:

1.) where can I get another 'cap'? I only have one cap from the 1100 and the GS1000 caps are just a little too small....see picture:

2.) What are people using for rear brakes? In my garage, I still have the GS1000 caliper and rotor...I also have the 1994 GSXR750 rear caliper (but no rotor).
 
Use all the gsxr for the brake and spacer + one gs1000 spacer on the right side.
I can post pic tomorrow.
I ended up buying new dust seal at the dealer.Dont forget the shims too.

What does your brake stay (bar) attach to on the swingarm? Is it the stock brake stay from the GSXR?

I was thinking of doing a top mounted caliper and using the orginal mounting place on the new swingarm. My only problem is finding a caliper from a bike that has the same size diameter as the GSXR rotor. The GSXR rotor has a smaller diameter compared to most top mounted calipers. Does anyone know the exact diameter of the GSXR rotor? ...does anyone know the diameter of some top-mounted caliper bikes? (example: what is the rear rotor diameter of a GS550? Katana?)
 
I did a little research and I might try it. The GS500f (2004-2009) is a top mounted caliper:

The GS500f:
Diameter of Rear rotor: 250mm(outer)/84mm(inner)​

The GSXR750:​
Diameter of Rear rotor: 240mm(outer)/89mm(inner)​

I found this information the internet so I'm not sure if it is correct. BUT, I might be able to use the GS500f caliper and caliper bracket with the rotor from the GSXR750 and still use the stock mounting location of the brake stay.​

On the other side: this might be way too much work. I do have the caliper and bracket from the GSXR750....if the brake stay is easy to attach I might just do a bottom mount. ​
 
Well, I've done some more research and decided to scrap the idea of using a newer GS500f caliper...I was able to use an older one/cheaper one. But before that, I had to buy a brake rotor (my wheel didn't come with one). I bought the rear rotor off a 1994 RF600...it fits perfect and it even came with the bolts.

Next, I bought the rear caliper off a 1993 GS500. I attached the GS500 caliper to the 1994 GSXR750 caliper bracket. (it fit perfect) This allows me to use the correct top-mount location of the caliper. Here area couple pictures:

Now, I have to work on the proper spacing. I have some extra spacers from the '94 GSXR750 and from the '78 GS1000. However, I can't figure out how to get the right spacing without installing the swingarm first. (I'm still trying to find some dust covers for the pivot bolt/bearings)

I have the ''same'' set up.
i had to grind the inside of the extrusion to clear the sprocket nuts when the wheel is at the foward place.
By the look of your you already do this.

Hey Marc, I haven't done it yet, but noticed that it will have to be done to keep the wheel in the center of the swingarm:

i have just grinded the bottom portion.
i will try to get a picture.
to get some more clearance i bought a sunstar rear sprocket and mounted it backward.This way i gain a little clearance on the swingarm and to line up the chain.

Hey Marc, I am having problems getting my rear sprocket to line up with my offset front sprocket. I think I might have to buy the sunstar rear sprocket that you mentioned above. Do you know where you ordered it from? Is the Sunstar Rear Sprocket offset too? Did you put any spacers on the sprocket side of your bike?

I'll try to take some pictures of my progress so you (and everyone else) can see the issue I am having.
