A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Any problems with putting a GS1000 in a GS850 frame?

I have a second Gs850G (1979) that may not have a good engine and was wondering if there was any major problems with dropping a GS1000 engine I just acquired into .
I could have sworn that I read that the 1000 was the same size engine & trainy that would match all the bolt holes & mounts. However I can't find any info now.
Has anybody ever gone down this path? Is it worth the attempt?
Any surprises that I won't like.

Thanks, Paul

If the 1000 is a chain-drive, forget it.

If it's a shaft-drive, you may have to fabricate a motor mount or two, and you will have to move the entire drive train over, including the drive shaft.

.

Assuming it's a shaftie, the motor will bolt in -- the mounts are the same. You'll need the driveshaft, carbs, and intake system (airbox & boots) from the donor bike. The throttle is easy -- just eliminate the closing cable.

You'll also need to make arrangements for ignition -- either transplant the electronic ignition from the GS1000 or convert to the points from the '79 GS850. If the 850 already has a Dyna electronic ignition, then use that, of course.

are the mounts not the same on the chain drive as on the shaft?! they look damn close if not! i just bought a 78 1000 to slap the motor in my 81 850 hardtail frame, and was hoping to run a set of 02 gsx-r wheels and the stock 850 electronic ignition on the 1000.

i hope it is as easy as it sounds!
