    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Anyone ever stipped and polished their calipers?

i am thinking about going this route. Just wondering if anyone else has done it and what the results were?
 
I was thinking of polishing my calipers but I figured it would be too time consuming doing it in the first place and trying to keep up the shine. What I did do was paint the caliper with black caliper paint and then only polish the flat area of the caliper that facing outwards. I also polished the bracket that holds the caliper to the forks, Ted

They don't look like that now. but thats how it turned out after I finished mine.

Did you guys clear coat after polishing? I was thinking of doing that so the finish will last longer
 
Nope, I didn't. I guess it might have helped, but would any CC stand up to the heat brakes can put out?

I have some clear coat that was made for aluminum wheels I was going to use on the calipers. Don't know how well it will hold up but I guess I will find out :)
 
Nice looking parts. Was thinking to do this on a bike I am working on. There are too many ribs and such to get into the ones I have without spending a weekend buffing.
 
The only problem with clearing metal is that all clears eventually yellow, and once they pit or flake, the only way to fix it is to strip it all off and do the whole job over. There are lots of prep chemicals body shops use to prep metal for paints, but I don't know if they'll work with just clear as far as proper adhesion and longevity of the final film layer of finish.
 
Pauly, it's an interesting point. I think knowing what I know now, I would definitely research painting after I polished. In a coastal clime, that aluminum does NOT stay polished for long. It was a real heart breaker

While the polished ones look good (as well as many of the other color options) semi gloss black is still the best choice from strictly functional point of view. It dissipates heat most efficiently.

Did you guys use aircraft stripper or just lots of sand paper?
 
I used clear engine paint on my parts, 5 years ago, and it still looks good. I'm just starting to get a little bit of corrosion back on the point cover but considering how long it lasted I can't complain. I'll do it again and it's good for another 5 years.

There is a clear that stands the test of time....called powder coat....doing a "resto" on my old buddy.....I have a 1979 that i used the entire front system from an 80 model calipers and rotors. These units as you may know are forged,and I used a file and grinders to remove the casting marks...smoothed them all out then clear coated. It has held up far better than I had expected,although I wasn't looking for a shiny finnish more a brush finnish,I also have the system full of Valvolines Synthetic brake fluid....it is universal...mixes with everything{cept silicone that will bugger up all rubber bits, been there done that once} and has the high temp rating of silicone too, and is readily available at Advance Auto Parts and Wally World too.....
