    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Anyone succesfully re-used a head gasket?

I've dissassembled my top end for new rings n things and the head gasket popped out pretty clean, just wondering if I can re-use it to save some $$'s.

Anyone else successfully done this?

They are like gaskets in a car in that they compress as the bolts are torqued to seat against both the heads and jugs and its a permanent squishing..youll get nowhere trying to reuse them except immediately redoing the job.

Man, that's alot of work to get to that head gasket in the first place, why would you ever want to risk the chance of having to do it again?
I'd opt for a new gasket and save yourself the headaches, it's money well spent.
 
Thats what i was thinking too..its already aprt..so its a no brainer to add the new gasket at that point.
 
I'd replace it. It's not as if they are some unreasonably expensive part to replace.
 
I did. Wanted to test drive an engine to see if the transmission and everything were good before doing a top end. Threw some cylinders and a head on, used an old gasket. It worked, ran fine, let me test the transmission which was fine. It was leaking a little oil after few hours.
 
I hate to admit it but I have done it too. I haven't put any mileage on the bike. It was the test bed for my 550 igniter project but so far after about 40 starts and running for up to 10 minutes at a time it looks as good as gold. I can't say what would happen over time but I'm guessing it will leak.

Likely ok for a short spell but like folks say why take a chance.
