    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Auto Battery Charger

I just bought a new battery for my '80 GS-850.
I have a 2 amp car charger.
Can I get away with using it for the initial charge or will I ruin the battery?
 
Charging at 2 amps will be fine. Just make sure the fluid level is where it belongs and the caps are loosened to vent the battery.

Didn't mean to get impatient.
The parts store closes soon and I want to ride.
I just couldn't remember if small batteries would be ruined by overcharging.
 
I know I need a smaller charger for the bike.
I am out of work at the moment and didn't want to spend money needlessly.
But I didn't want to ruin a good battery either.:oops:
 
If you only want to buy ONE, go to Wal-Mart, get the Schumacher battery charger/maintainer. It is $18.44, has either a 1 1/2 or 2 amp charger, then tapers off to a maintenance charge. You can connect this to your battery when you store it for the winter, and disconnect it when you are ready to ride.

If the charger you are looking at is a manual charger, I would not even leave it connected overnight. About 6 hours should be the max. If it is an 'automatic' charger, I would not go more than a day or so, but if it's a charger/maintainer, you can leave it on indefinitely.

I have an older 2/10 amp charger.
I will pick up a smaller one when finances permit.
I will just let it charge on 2 for about 5 hours.
I have to change the carb manifold boots and can't find my impact set.
This is not being a good weekend.:mad:
 
another option is to find a 12v power supply, and hook that up to the battery. I haven't got a charger out here at school, but 400ma for like a day worked like a charm on my friends and my battery
