Auto cancel turn signal 1980 GS850L

Hi there...I've discovered an interesting occurrence. I was pretty sure that the auto cancel feature on my bike was dead...had given up on it... I drive to work on my bike every day the roads are dry... and the last week or so..it's been cold in the morning.... and... in the cold below about 40 degrees F My auto cancel works... when it gets warmer it doesn't then it get colder and again...it works. Any ideas where and what I should look for if I want to fix this?

I'd get a new/used Turn Signal Control Unit. All the units on 1980 and new bikes are the same. Shouldn't be hard to find one for cheap.

same thing happens on my 850. i think it has something to do with the semi conductors in the unit. anyway, it's shot and new ones cost a real lot. i did find one on ebay a while back for my 1000 that was like brand new for about 20 bucks, but that was a fluke. like winning the lottery.

I wouldn't pay more than $25 for one. Try the Parts Wanted forum. The second generation TSCU's are pretty robust and plentiful since a good number of bikes came with them. It's the early TSCU's that are so problematic.

I would try re soldering the circuit board first.

Aside from thinking about the TSCU itself, also think about the signal from the speedometer. Your sysmptoms could be caused by that also.

I've gotten used to turning them off after a turn. It's too bad they only work when it's colder the 40degF... I don't know that it's that big a deal but the new ones are anywhere from 75 to 100 bucks. Good ideas here though... Thanks for the input.

is this correct?

1st gen. tcsu, which i believe are the ones in 78 and 79 gs1000's, can cause complete turn signal failure when they stop working.

later units, like in the 80 gs850, may not actually work but still allow the signals to be turned on and off manually.

Those units can fail in any number of ways starting with erratic self cancel, loss of turn signals on one side or the other on up to a complete system failure.

The '80 and up models used a second generation Turn Signal Control Unit.
I've found these to be fairly reliable. The last one I got was on E-bay for
$3.50. These are all over E-bay, I wouldn't pay much for one because of that.

This is a first generation Turn Signal Control Unit, notice it has two plastic connectors, and it doesn't come with that rubber boot. I won this one on E-bay not long ago for $15 and change. It actually worked! Only the second one in about 20 that I got that did. These were used on 78-79 GS1000's and '79 GS850.

This is NOT a turn signal control unit, but it is listed as such. This unit goes under the gas tank to a '82-'83 GS1100E and is used for the idiot lights for the gauge cluster. That rubber band gives it away.

Here's a 2nd generation Turn Signal control unit used on '80 up bikes on E-bay. If you look hard you will probably find one cheaper.

Here's a 1st generation Turn Signal Control Unit used on '78-'79 GS1000's and '79 850G. These are getting hard to find and most are listed as "ignitor" or "CDI"units such as this one. Out of the 20 or so I found off of E-bay only 2 fully worked.
And what I mean by that is they flashed right and left and self cancelled. I did however receive many that worked to the point where they wouldn't self cancel but did flash right and left.

The TSCU can be removed entirely from the system on these bikes and the flashers will still operate, but obviously, they will be fully manual.

Second generation. I have a number of them that didn't make my cancelling work. A brand new one did. I traded out gauge clusters and swithc pods, relays and controllers numerous times, without making them cancell. New relay and controller, and now they work, so I'm happy. If everyone else has had good luck with used controllers and relays, then I was unlucky I guess. I will say that this is the ONLY second generation Suzuki self cancelling system that I have ever had a problem with, and I own five of them now, and have owned five others in the past. This one bike has never been parked next to any of the others, as I keep it at my mom's for when I'm in So Cal. The rest are in Maine and Oregon. I was never able to easily swap out known good components for testing. Used parts I bought and collected did not fix it, new ones did.

Problem is, you can't get to it without destroying it.
