Back on the lift

So my 83 has been languishing in storage for the last several months while I got my DR650 going. This morning I decided enough was enough and went down to the storage place to bring the GS back up to the house. First, however, I needed coffee. The coffee shop is conveniently situated right across the street from storage. Ahhh....properly caffeinated, I popped across the street and aired up the tires and checked everything over. I've regularly run it so the carbs should be
good. I just replaced the vacuum petcock with a manual because ethanol keeps sticking the vacuum valve.
Bike fired immediately but has an intermittent miss. Nothing a good romp back up the mountain won't fix.
Wheeeeeee! Bike initially still had a slight misfire but it improved as I rode. Made it to the house and..... Look at that ! Is that oil dripping off my stator cover ?
Why yes.....yes it is. Coming from where the stator wire bundle comes through the cover. Hmmm...did I put any sealant on there ? Oop!
I don't think I did. So there's another project. Bike is getting new tires and brake pads.

That is nice. Mine has a slight stumble and I have been putting off a valve adj and carb sync. Ya talked me into it. Time to roll up the sleeves !!!

Sounds like the grommet fell out of the case.

I always put a little wipe of three bond in the U shape the grommet sets in and adross the flat spot regardless. The rubber shrinks and takes a set when compressed and often leak. Im not happy about doing double work.

So I did some checking. Stator cover not leaking at all. In fact very little oil under the sprocket cover. I ran it with the cover off and... No leaks. Hmmm...
Could be coming from the counter shaft seal or shift shaft or clutch rod. Ill have to ride it again and recheck. It's possible the seals got a little hard from sitting and running
may have stopped the leak. We'll see.
As for the misfire, both #2&3 were seemingly not firing. Powered by the same coil. So I bought one. For giggles I decided to remove the slides in #2&3 carbs. Both needles had a
grungy build up on them. Cleaned that off and tried to run it again. GADZOOKS!!! its now running smoothly on all 4. WOOT!
So, next is new tires and front brake pads.

Replaced the front pads with EBC HH and took it for a spin. The leak turned out to be fuel from the new petcock where it bolts to the tank. I snugged up the bolts and it's now dry.
I decided to take it for a spin. Running great and it's fun to ride. I'm happy.
