A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 1980 GS 450 with a backfire  problem that's driving me crazy, I can get rid of it :( . So far I have change oil, and filter, spark plugs, spark plug caps, air filters (aftermarket). And problem remained. I went to my local Suki dealer and spoke to a mechanic, who show me how to adjust the air jet screw, (the air screws were visible so I figure someone tampered with it before). Problem remained. Took the carburators apart and deep cleaned it in a carb and parts cleaning solution, for 20 min each part as suggested on this web site. Changed all the gaskets and O rings. Mount it back on the bike, started it and it ran fine. No backfire :D ; Took it out for a spin, and it happend again :x , but this time when I speed up and release the throtle quickly, then the backfire will start. What am I doing wrong, is it a set of new carb my answer. Please help. Thank you all in advance.

You could have a leak in your exhaust system, air gets in,combines with unburnt fuel and BANG!Check all the connections including header to cylinder head.

Backfire, Backfire, Backfire! That's three Russian bombers...

Tupolev lives!

Seriously, it's most probably an exhaust leak.

Are you talking about exhaust "popping" or actual backfires, which are like small explosions?

What color are the electrodes on your spark plugs?

If you got points then it's the condenser's shorting out. It's time for some new points and condensers.

Most problems are

10% Carbs

90% Electrical

And if it's FI then it's 100% electrical.

Good Luck

Also if you messed with your mixture screw at all, and is setup too lean it will pop when you close the throttle at higher rpms. Probably an exhaust leak, but if that doesn't cure it, make your mixture screws a tad richer.

Dougie, I didn't expect too many people to get the "Backfire bomber" joke, but I'm glad at least you did!

That was a "Bear" of a joke, eh? :D :D

I'm glad it didn't altogether "bomb"...
