    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

backfiring on 1980 gs450 (no point adjusters) what do i do

i've reluctantly purchased an old gs450 from some guys basement just because i heard it run. since then i ran into some problems, found that the valves were bad and ended up changing the entire engine head and valves. But now that the things back together i tried starting it and the only explosion i get is into the air filters! I dont know what the hell to do, when this happened on my kz400 i just adjusted the valves or the points. But on this bike both are solid systems with no real adjusting. ANY SUGGESTIONS??
 
You can adjust the valves with shims. I haven't had the pleasure yet. Also the CDI (timing) can be ever so slightly adjusted. Again nothing I have had to do yet. The procedures for both of these tasks are pretty well described in the Haynes manual I have.
 
When you re-installed the camshaft, did you make sure the timing marks were alligned? Hope this isn't insulting, but that's just the kind of symptoms you would get.
 
yeah i made pretty damn sure about the cam chain timing, but if its my last resort i'll double check. do you think the mixture could have something to do with it?
 
I'm stumped too. Hopefully, one of the expert users will see this thread and help you out.

does anyone think the backfiring could be a bad igniter?

i've recently checked all the possible mechanical errors i can think of. The only things left are either the fact that it has pod air filters. or that the igniter is possibly bad. one time i accidentally left the bike on for about 10 minutes without running it and the result was the main igniter coil being really hot. hmmm.

this really sucks and its probably messing up my carbs to have explosions going back through them. oh yeah... every once and a while the combustion will go the right way (out the mufflers)
