A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

bad stator

1982 GS1100G recovered from 15 years of neglect. After I got it cleaned up and running the battery was not charging. Normal test of the stator revealed that two of the three wire combinations is putting out the 65 to 75 volts depending on RPM. Not sure exactly what the RPM is because the Tach cable is bad, but I think it's close to 'normal.'

The third wire combination is about 3 or 4 volts. So, I assume it's a bad stator. I opened it up and the stator was covered with thin black crusty stuff; over, under, around all the wiring. It came off easily with a brush but there's still some of this junk between some of the windings. It's so thin it looks like dried paint, but very flaky. Under the crust is a normal covering of plastic just like all the other stators in my collection. (they fit GS850s but not the 1100)

I also noticed that when it had been running for a few minutes the stator wires were all hot. Almost too hot to touch.

Four questions:
1. Anyone ever see what I'm describing here with the black crusty stuff and, assuming it's carbon based, any chance that it's causing a short? If that's the case, could cleaning it again, more thoroughly, help?

2. or; Am I correct that a new stator is the only proper fix, or should I be looking at a rotor, too. Can anything go wrong with the rotor?

3. or is it possible that a stator can be re-wound by an amateur. If this is possible, is it so hard that the $120 for an aftermarket is just money well spent? (Bike Bandit lists OEM for about $230.)

4. Should I replace the R/R at the same time, under the assumption that the bad stator fried it?

Thanks to everyone for all the great advice.

I'm no whiz at electronics, so I am going to venture a guess here. Sounds to me that the stator got way to hot and burned up. I would replace the R/R and stator as a combo, and try again. I would also put in a fresh battery, as the last thing you need is a shorted battery as well.

Just my thoughts.

Stator is Dead. And when you replace it, Hard-wire it in (cut off and direct solder the wires). The 'crust' is burned oil.
