    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Base Gasket Issue

I am having an issue with a rebuild, I have started putting things back together only to find that the oval type rubber rings that go under the base gasket on the crankcase that came with my "complete" gasket kit don't seem to fit. They seem to big, and collapse around the head bolt.

So my question is, are they needed, where can I get them, or should the ones provided fit?

Thanx for any help.
 
Don't know what bike this is - What brand gasket set?

Somehow I never have a problem with the OEM gaskets...
 
Sorry, 81 GS1000G, Gasket kit is an Athena. And for clarification it is the Egg shaped rubbers I am having trouble with.
 
Don't know about that bike, others here know it better than me.

However, I'm not sure I've heard much good about the Athena sets...

Maybe buy an OEM base & head gasket.

The G O-rings are different than the chain drive 1000 O-rings. Maybe you got the CD ones, which are larger? Oh, and Athena base gaskets suck. You are lucky to have run into this problem, now you can get an OE base gasket and some proper O-rings.
 
That does seem to be the case, is there a part number that I can get these things, or is it going to mean buying another gasket set? I have gone through the online exploded parts diagrams, and can't seem to find them.

Not sure where you are looking but they are in the OE parts fishe under the "Cylinder" section.

Part# 09280-21004 Desc CYLINDER NO 2 O
Part# 11241-49401-H17 Desc GASKET,CYLINDER

Do yourself a favor and get two of those O-rings and an OE base gasket. I used that same gasket kit on my 1000 and the base gasket is starting to squeeze out of place and crack after 200 miles. Also, you need to have a good torque wrench and torque the head to 27 ft-lbs after each heat cycle right after the rebuild since the gaskets compress and settle a lot. Mine settled down after three torquings but now the base gasket is squirming out of place.
 
Alright, guess I am out gasket set, LOL, clutch cover didn't fit, ended up replacing pistons with Wiseco's, so had to get a wiseco head gasket. Now the base gasket. Jeez that was a waste of $120.

Off to the dealer on Tuesday I guess, cause they aren't open Mondays. Means I have to find some patience and wait.
