A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hello everyone, I have just bought my first bike a 1981 GS650GT and I have to say that it is something different then driving a car.
Anyway with all of this enjoyment I replaced the battery with a new one, and I only got two days out of it before the bike just died while i was riding. I noticed little things just before it happend like, the lights were dimming and the turn signals when turned on would not flash, just stay solid. I had a friend put some jumper cables on the bike so that I could get the bike home, it worked but when I got home it died again. When the bike sits for the day it seems to have the full charge, but while I drive the bike it dies like it's not charging at all.
Anyone with any idea on what this problem may be and how to fix this please let me know, it's killing knowing that I can't ride the bike with this problem.
Thanks alot.[-o<

First, Welcome to the GSR! Second, You have a Charging Problem. In the Garage Section of this Site You will Find "The Stator Papers" which is a Step By Step Manual for Checking the Components of the Charging System. You Will need a Good Meter but this should let You know Which Components, Stator, Regulator, Rectifier, is/are Bad. The Charging System is the Achiles Heel of these Otherwise Very Dependable Bikes But is Fixable! Good Luck:-D

If it was your r/r you would probably be overcharging.Clean all grounds and see what happens first with a meter

I had the same problem on my gs750. It was one of the diodes in my rectifier.

Thank you everyone for your responces, tonight after work I will start looking at everything.

marvinsc, I couldn't seem the locate the Garage section of this forum "The Stator Papers". I would really like to have a look at this, if you could post the direct link to this site that would be great.

Once again thank you all who have responded so far, I will keep you updated on what I find.

Thank you again everyone. I have done the tests on the Regulator / Rectifier and the Stator.
The R/R seems to be working properly to my knowledge, however the stator I can't say the same. The first step measuring the Ohms of the three polls (0.8 / 0.9 / 1.1). Second I tested the conductivity of the yellow wire to the engine case (infinate). Third the voltage at 5,000 rpm (22.8V / 3.5V / 20.8V). Now I think I found the problem....

I have looked into ElectroSport website although I wouldn't mind trying to find a cheeper Stator (Used). If anyone has or know where a used stator is for a 1981 GS650G it would be much appreiciated.

I live in Calgary Alberta Canada, and I need to be able to ship it hear.

Did the new Stator solve your problem?

Did the new Stator solve your problem?

I'm reluctant to spend the money without some validation.

Did the new Stator solve your problem "permanently"?

Thanks,

Doug

It does sound like Their is something wrong with the stator YOU DID CHECK with it disconnected from the reg AND your meter on AC voltage
