    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Battery Upgrade: GS1000

Hello,

I am thinking about getting a different battery for my 1979 GS 1000, something smaller and sealed so I can mount it out of sight. I've recently installed a SH775 r/r and a new stator as well. What are the specifications I should look for as far as amperage and the like?

Per the parts fishe, the stock battery is PN YB14L-A2

I believe this references a Yuasa 14Ah battery.
 
For ease of maintenace, I'd recommend a sealed/Gel variant of the battery. According to my experience, you get a selecion of those to most common stock variants.
 
"Sealed" is no problem at all. AGM (that is a construction type, not a brand name) batteries are available everywhere and are highly recommended.

"Lighter" means smaller, and less capacity, unless you go with a Lithium-type construction.
There are at least four things to consider there:
1. Do you think that removing about 6 or 7 pounds of battery will change the feel of a 500-pound bike very much?
2. Look at all the news reports of Hoverboards and "smart"phones and their Lithium batteries bursting into flame. You want that happening under your butt while cranked over in a corner?
3. Lithium batteries are a LOT more expensive.
4. Lithium batteries require different a charging protocol, usually microprocessor-controlled. Your bike doesn't have one. Because of that, your battery will likely never charge properly, which may leave you stranded somewhere on the road. At least the bike will be lighter while you push it home. :oops: :-\\\

I ran a Lithium Ion in my ATV for awhile and they are sensitive to be charged correctly. If they drop below a certain voltage, they can't be recharged... and if you try to recharge them after that, well they get real hot, melt the side off the battery, and smoke (at least that's what happened to me).

My biggest fear on our older bikes with the known charging system issues, is that they just may not work reliably...or worse.
