A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi Guys, I have a GS550e 1980. I've stripped the bike down and in the process of rebuilding her.

Last night I took the forks apart to clean and replace the seals. One came apart easy and the springs just slid out whilst the other was properly stuck. When I took off the top nut (under pressure) it properly popped!! Turns out the fork was working purely on the main spring and the stanchion is bent so needs replacing.

Forgive the history, but thought it might be interesting?! So on to the question.....

A new stanchion is about ?120 (that's about $10 post brexit!) and I can get second hand forks for about ?60 so for me a no brainer..... I'm looking at a pair of forks on eBay that are ?36 listed as....

' GS550e front forks 47/0201 Fits 1982 -85'

I only want one of the stanchions, will this be the same size as my 1980 GS550e?

Are there other models of GS's that share the same forks or stanchions?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

In that year range (82-85), there's a possibility that you're looking at GSX550 forks. You can use a parts fiche to look up the correct part number for your stanchion, and cross-reference it to other models.

Thanks mate, I've looked at the new stanchions and they are in the 77 - 80 bracket so I'm looking for those to come up whilst I put something else together !!

They can be straightened by any good machine shop that works on bikes, I had mine done for $25.00, it only takes 15 -20 mins for a competent person.
