    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Best way to mount an oil cooler?

What's the best way to mount an oil cooler, with the input and output ports facing up or facing down? It seems like with the Yoshi bike the input/output were facing down. Just theorizing but it seems like this would allow the oil to drain back into the motor with the engine shut off. But wouldn't this allow for an air pocket to form at the top of the cooler?

not if you fit a thermostat or a one way valve from the return from the cooler. maybe im wrong but this should stop oil draining out.
but saying that would it cause an air pocket if your engine is adaquately vented? the oil pressure will quickly fill the cooler again and the vent would prevent an air lock in the cooler

How would the oil pressure on a cooler with outlet on the bottom of the cooler push out an air bubble which would form at the top of the cooler? That's the question...:confused: For that reason, theoretically mounting the cooler with the outlet facing up would be a better choice?

because the oil pressure would be greater than the air pressure

I assume the cooler is just a zig zagged pipe, so any bubbles will be pushed around the system and back into the engine where it can vent.

I asked this question a few months ago and had a thread. I will be mounting mine face up. I believe the air will be forced out anyways.
 
Up or down doesn't matter. Mine are run down and it works just fine.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but could you post a few more pics up of how you mounted that cooler bruce? I worked on a mounting location for quite a while for mine. Never really found an amazing place for it as the tach cable is always in the way. I cut a bracket that would be welded to the frame, but haven't done anything with it yet. I have the same cooler as you.

The factory cooler setup had a thermostat that allowed the oil to get up to temperature before it let the oil run through the cooler. Mine has the ports on top and the GSXR cooler I'll be mounting soon will be facing up, with lines from a Katana 600 which have the right fittings at the engine for my 700 and the right type fitting at the cooler for it. The cooler measures 8"X17". I'm going to need all the cooling capacity I can get pretty soon.

What do you mean by "factory cooler"? The later GS engines that came with coolers didn't have thermostats as far as I can tell. The Lockhart (spelling?) ones did, although they are aftermarket.

Edit: found out that the 750ES has an thermostat function. Check the end of this thread for more info if interested.

Mine mounts up to the horn mounting bosses on the bottom and one bolt on top that holds a harness anchor. Mounts have rubber grommets from a automotive wiper motor. After this photo was taken I ditched the front mount horn and installed an air horn at the back of the bike.

There is a plunger down in the area of the filter cavity. The manual states it operates off of oil temperature.

You can safely go either way. The benefit to up is your oil site glass will read correctly. Down will require over-filling the sump to accommodate the coolers capacity. Down probably results in cheaper AN fittings.

I looked through my pics and I don't have any that show the mount. But I can take some and get them to you. My cooler came with a bracket that was made for the GS1000. It uses the existing bolt holes that are on the front of the frame.

That looks to be unique to your bike...maybe the 750's also? My 1150 doesn't have anything like that.
 
Is anyone using an oil thermostat? Are they needed? If you are using one, how did you mount it?
 
Did the 83 Es have a factory cooler ? Just looking at an old pic of a buddy's 83 next to my 82.

Back to the original topic...we were having a conversation about this on our race cars. Talked to Setrab and they indicated there was no real pro/con in mounting it up, down, sideways or whatever.
 
My cooler is mounted with the ports facing down. It has a built in thermostat that just bypasses the cooler till the oil reaches 170F. Rustybronco gave me an old Kerker cooler that has the therostat seperate that basically does the same thing.
