    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Best way to pull an engine?

I'm in he middle of swapping a new engine into my 77 gs750.
I've disconected everything i need to and have all the mounts unbolted.
I have a floor jack type bike stand that doesnt work, so its out of the question.
Should I use some sort of jack or wait till i get a second body to help me.
I can left and carry the "new" engine myself a little bit, But i havent been able to wrestle the old block out of the frame solo.
Any advice from anyone who has done a swap?

From having done many engine swaps...my advice is it never hurts to have a helper....one little slip and hello hosipital bills.8-[
If you HAVE to do it alone,
get some 2x10's, place them under the frame on both side of the frame,
that way if the engine slips, it won't fall far.
Make sure the wheels can not move, secure them somehow.

FWIW. Floor jacks are useless on these small engine moves.

After picking one out of the frame, then sitting it back in. I was told the easiest way it to get a tire. Then lay the whole bike over, engine and all so the engine is cradled inside the tire. Then pick the frame back up.

To go back in, cradle the engine in the tire, and put the frame over it, then pick them back up as a unit.

I've seen someone use an engine stand and drop the rolling chassy onto the engine.

then I took awhile thinking HOW in the HEll am I going to get this damn motor back into the frame after just having Back surgery and came up with this metod, it worked beyond well.

If he can do it with a back back like that then that method has my vote.
 
Not only is lowering the chassis down on a car engine hoist clever.. but the black engine looks sweet
What kinda of paint was used?
 
my guess is engine paint. even more specifically, black engine paint.
 
I've pulled the engines out of my 77 and 78 and needed help both times...it's a heavy lump and evidently I'm not strong enough to do it without damaging either myself or the bike. My son and I do the lifting and my daughter steadies the bike which is on a swingarm stand.

I'm sure you know that the engine on your bike has to come out the right side, and because the bottom of the engine sits lower than the bottom frame rails you must lift it slightly before you can pull it out. I found it helps to remove the breather on top of the valve cover to get just a little more clearance. As mentioned earlier, have something handy to set the engine on in case you need to put it down in a hurry. It's an awkward procedure.

When reinstalling the engine, I protected my frame with foam pipe insulation. Good luck.
