    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Big Time Tranny Trouble?

Well, the dependable old GS left me stranded for the first time this afternoon. :cry: A beautiful day for a ride and she was running just fine. I stopped in town due do few errands. When I pulled out onto the highway to head home I attempted to shift from 1st to 2nd I heard a clunk...and started to coast...no gears..... 8O . I could shift through all gears & neutral but got no connection to the drive shaft, (just some ominous sounding rattling/vibration coming from the tranny cover on the right side when I reved the engine in any gear)...Any thoughts on where to start and what I am likely to find when I get the beast home and tear into it. :?:

The most likely cause is stripped out splines in the rear differential. It's fairly common I hear, and it's something that could go out on you suddenly like that. You'll need to remove the rear wheel and see if the driving gear turns. I'm sure you could see the damage too.

That's the first thing I will check when I get it home, but the noise comming from the tranny makes me think there's some other problem....
 
If the shaft isn't turning, just trace it upstream. Next stop is the bevel gear between the tranny output shaft and the final drive shaft.
 
99% odds are you have stripped the splines in the drive adapter in the rear wheel.

My buddies chain drive GS 750ES had similar issues, though that spline thing could be it.

His turned out to be a $2.00 spring attached to the inner case webbing and the shift pawl mechanism.

It could of been accessed from the oil pan, but he ended up splitting the whole engine to discover this.

If the shaft isn't it, this maybe worth a look.
 
Yes the splines are the first thing to check. Push the rubber drive shaft boot back & hold the rear break on. Run the motor in gear If the drive shaft turns the wheel adapter is bad it's bad. If the drive shaft doesn't turn The next thing to check would be the beveled gears

I think you are right :!: I have been out of town so I didn't have a chance to look at it until today. Pulled back the drive shaft boot and put a wrench on one of the bolts to keep it from turning and I was still able to spin the rear wheel. Kind of surprized because I had the real wheel off about 5K ago to replace the tire and the gear didn't look like it had too much wear. So I cleaned & greased it and threw it back together. Really glad it isn't more serious... (and that it didn't happen when I was touring around Vancouver Island a couple of weeks ago)

Is the placement gear readily availble through Suzuki or Bike Bandidt :?:

Any tricks to removing /replacing it I should be aware of :?:
 
If you have a wrecking yard near look for one from 79-80 is the best (black in color). But All of the adapters are the same so any 850/1000/1100 will fit
