Hey guys! so I've been working on my bikes problem's for a while now. It didn't start at all before. so far I put a new starter relay and that fixed the not cranking over problem. now I think I have a bad battery, even after being tested and told it was good. I ended up having to bump start the bike, It will stay running with the choke on, but as soon as I take it off, it dies, or if I try to ride it with choke on it also dies, this problem I've have even after cleaning the carbs, checking the float level's, and re-shimming the valves. (which needed it pretty badly.) To me I it sounds like a fuel problem, I'm charging my battery now so hopefully it will hold a charge.

Could it be the idle is to low? which doesn't make sense cause it idles very high with the choke on. I'm pretty lost as what to do.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

try turning the idle up a bit, see i it helps. it will idle a lot higher when the choke is on.
check your fuel tap is working ok and flowing petrol as it should do.
i see you have pod filters and open pipes, have you rejetted the carbs accordingly?
also, have the carbs been synched since the rebuild?

So is the jetting all stock with no mufflers and pod filters?

You are running straight head pipes with no mufflers, right?

Carbs have not, the bike won't run long enough for me to synch it. But I had the same problem before I cleaned the jets/carbs and I had them synched.i have not rejetted, but it was running before without a problem. I have my jet number writen down, I'll post them here soon. Fuel tap is good. Do you think it really could be a jetting problem even if it did work before?

I think the jetting is stock, can't be sure, the owner before chopped them.

Okay, I have a 102 main and a 15 pilot jet. I'm not sure if I need to go up or down?

That would depend on what your bike is. We see a VERY LARGE picture of it in your sig (it's really a bit too big), but don't know what it is to suggest jet sizes.

If so, then maybe your carb cleaning was inadequate -how did you do it ??. You need to put your bike in signature to help us bad guessers. Open pipes will be challenging- what brand of pods are you using?

you are not making much sense, you say firstly the bike would not start at all, then you cleaned the carbs and synched them.(bench synch?).
then you go on to say it was running before without a problem....when before??

Jets

Jets

If the bike runs on the choke and not when choke is off, your pilot circuit is plugged. you have to remove all the pilot jets, make sure they are clear, AND make sure the passages they go into are clear as well. Right now the motor is getting fuel through the choke system, when you shut off the choke, there is no fuel being delivered from the idle circuit. Disassemble and clean and report back.:o

Hi,

You'll find a stock jetting chart on my little website along with the proper procedures for cleaning your carbs. Start there and continue on down the maintenance lists found in the "mega-welcome" (in your other thread). Skipping steps or taking shortcuts will be frustrating at best, deadly at worst. Everything starts with properly cleaned carbs, properly adjusted valves, properly cleaned and functioning charging system. It's an old bike that needs maintenance.

With your setup you will need to go up at least 4 to 6 sizes on the main jets, maybe one size on the pilot jets, and possibly shim the jet needles to richen up the mid-range. "Plug chops" should be performed so that you can read the plugs and see if each carb circuit is rich or lean.

CLICK HERE for the "mega-welcome" and its maintenance lists.

Click the link in my sig for the library I've been collecting.

TIP: Click on the "User CP" link in the upper left corner of the page. Create a signature file with your bike year and model.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I totally agree with maddevill, I had the exact same problem that you are having. I pulled the carbs off 3 times and cleaned them and recleaned them and recleaned them, but the problem. After putting in all new jets, diaphrams and o-rings and gaskets, it still did it. i thought they were possessed and I needed an exorcist. Then I carried them up to a local job and had them clean those carbs in their sonic cleaner. When out back on, the bike ran like a champ. The point I'm making is you might think you have cleaned them, but all it takes is a tiny spec of crud to block one of thoser tiny passages. Good luck.

Started by completely taking the carb apart, spraying the jets with carb cleaner. took a air compressor to the jets. took the jets out, cleaned them with a tiny wire (manual says so). I've had to re-size my signature, it was huge before, but here it is now.

Pods are some cheep off brand, > http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-42MM-POD-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item43b7a47109&vxp=mtr

Sorry, So, one day I was riding it and started running like crap (bogging at high speed, headlight flickering), I had to have it on choke just so it wouldn't die. The next day I went to look at it, it wouldn't even crank over, I ended up tracing it back to a bad starter relay. I replaced it, and that fixed the cranking over part. I got it started, for a little bit, I checked to see if the carbs were synched at this point, and the were all fine. the bike sounded bad when it was running. At that point I decided to clean the carbs. after that the bike would start, and run poorly, and only with choke on. I checked the valve clearances and 5 of them were way to tight. so, I re-shimed them this last weekend. I went to start it, after sitting for a month and it was having some trouble getting going so I bump started it (first try too.) It sounded better, but that was only with choke on. taking it off choke kills it, trying to ride it with choke on also makes the motor die.

Is there anyway this could be some weird electrical problem?

Okay.

What the heck is a sonic cleaner! most shops have them?

It's a tub with chimical product and when you start it, ultrasonic is produce and the reaction clean the pieces. Most of the shop have yes, but where i'm working we have another stuff, here we call it 'gunk' and it's very very strong. The aluminium comes bright and all the brass of the carb and jets came bright gold. I cleaned my 2 carb with that stuff and the bike run like new.
