    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Blown main fuse

I own an 81 GS750L
I come to the GS gurus to ask the question...

What would be the reason for my main fuse to blow out as I am riding?
On my way to work, the bike lost all power. The main fuse had blown out.
The fuse had not blown out the center, but it seems as if it had gotten extremely hot and melted the end on the inside as there was a small 'ball' of what looks to be solder inside the fuse.
Will it be best to run a larger amp fuse?

NOOOOO! If it is the stock amp fuse, larger will only create bigger problems further down the line in the harness. Clean up all the connections (and use dielectric grease) check the R/R output to the battery and report back. DO NOT just drop a larger fuse in there or we'll be reading a post that states: " Bike Melted Down...Now What ".

I would not put in a bigger fuse. Replace the fuse & check the charging system as a starting point.

I'd be suspect of the fuse block. If there is more resistance on one end of the terminal than the other, there would be more heat created at that end. This may be the cause, though it is only speculation...
 
I don't recall hearing about any laws of physics saying that fuses have to blow in the middle...

typically, the mid portion of the wire inside the fuse is a little thinner than at the ends

True. But something hot enough to melt the end of the wire should have been hot enough to melt the endcap as all of the heat would have been transferred through it.

Did you have any other problems along with it??
The reason I ask is that I currently keep my bike plugged into my battery tender at night since I have had to push start it a couple of times after I have started it 2-3 times during the day.
I haven't had the time to troubleshoot the charging system yet as I have been working from 6am-7pm and I dont want to start working on it and then not be able to complete it to ride to work the next day.

Also, where did you purchase your R/R?

That sounds really R/R related. Sounds like your battery is not charging. You "Should" go through the stator papers though to be sure as it COULD be the stator. If you got the extra dough and not the extra time replace the R/R if that don't work replace the stator. That was my plan but all I needed was the R/R :)

I got my R/R from Z1, it was cheap and bigger but not to big as to not fit where it goes. Lots of other people get theirs from a guy on here called Duunage (Spelling??)

I will look at purchasing one.
I also want to do a 530 sprocket and chain conversion as my sprockets are worn causing my just purchased chain to go to crap.
It seems like this bike is going to be costing me a bit of money.
I'm kinda on the fence about getting all the parts for it when I have a cb500 and a cb750 in the garage that need a few parts also and my wife keeps telling me I have too many projects.

I think she has wised up to those types of responses already.
It was probably after I bought the fourth bike that I started loosing my charm and she started to figure out something was going on.:rolleyes:
 
so you know the magic number is three! (glad I'm at three)

on topic... r/r most likely the cause.
