    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does anybody have any recomendations for removing a valve cover bolt that's broke off? There's about 3/8" of the broken half still sticking up out of the head. I tried vice grips with no luck. It's torqued in there good. Thanks for any help.
 
use some penetrating oil for a few days.
Use some heat from a propane torch
and cut a groove in it with a hacksaw so you can hit it with a impact wrench after doing the above.
 
I agree with the impact tool, with a slit cut you can use an imact screwdriver, available for around $12 at any auto parts store, and an invaluable tool for working these old screws.
 
The other thing is that the bolt is right under the frame and I don't know if I have enough room to get a whack at it.
 
By the way, I did not break the bolt. I was removing the valve cover to do a valve adjustment and discovered the PO had just put the other half in the hole and smeared permatex all over it and all over the edge of the cover on the inside with hopes of keeping it from leaking. Didn't work. Also, you should have seen the globs of permatex that was covering the half moons underneath the chrome covers. What a mess! Now I just have to try and find a manual so I know what to set the valve spacings at.
 
PB Blaster is good at penetrating in there and loosening up bolts. It kind of wicks into the threads.
 
Like other have said, try cutting a slot, even without an impact, a real nice flat head thats nice and wide and a wrench on that broke loose cross-threaded trans mount bolts in my old car... If not drill a small hole and use an bolt/screw extractor
 
The only way I could get the one that broke on me out, was to soak it with PB for a couple days. Then, with the assistance of a helper to hold a propane torch on it, I grabbed it with a pair of vice grips and twisted back and forth until it broke loose. After that it was just a matter of keeping the bolt hot enough to be loose and releasing and re-gripping of the bolt with the vice grips until that little SOB finally came outta there.......


I still mad at that bolt !!!!!:mad:

Take your time, just keep the area around the bolt hot enough to spin the bolt with the vice grips to avoid overheating.

It's a task, but it can be done.:)
 
I have used my dremil to cut a slot into stud then remove it with a screwdriver.
