A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

BS head to VM carbs boots

As the title says I have an '80 GS850 which stock came with BS carbs. It now has VM29 carbs but I still have what I believe to be a leak because of the intake pipes. The problem is that the stock intake pipes will fit the bolt spacing and therefore seal properly but they are too big for the 'mouth' of the VM carbs. The bike now has intake pipes for a KZ1000 but with the bolt holes expanded (I actually had to open them up all the way to make them fit). They fit the 'mouth' of the VM carbs perfectly but obviously - I think - they are not sealing properly now. So I am looking for suggestions as to how to make the intake pipes from the '80 GS fit the 'mouth' of the VM29 carbs properly. Are there metal sleeves that can go on the VM carbs to make them fit these intake boots better? Can I just use the '80 intake boots and tighten the collars more?

Thank you,

Raz

If you executed your carb boot modification exactly, they should seal properly. One bike I bought (GS1000) had VM29's and modified Kawasaki boots and everything seemed kosher as near as I could tell.

I thought so as well. I had to open the holes up all the way to make the intake pipes fit properly over the ports. I even made oval washers to ensure that the pressure of the bolts got distributed properly. I still think I have a leak because when cold the bike idles beautifully but after running for a while and taking a few road bumps the idle jumps to 1500RPM but will come down if I grab the carbs and gently pull on them. But I may be wrong, I'm open to suggestions.

BTW I checked out the link above for Dennis Kirk. I love how they give all the dimensions for those boots in standard units even though they are for metric bikes!!
