Burning through stators

Why do I keep burning up stators?

oil doesn’t run dry or remarkably low, I keep it topped up when chasing the oil blow by issues… have a mosfet r/r. Good connections between…

maybe this is just par for the course, but it looks like the insulation is breaking down and it’s gonna die eventually. Had a lithium batt in there for a few years, went back to AGM at the top of this season.

Should they look new after a few years running on an optimized setup?

What PN is your R/R? You need a SH775, to help protect your stator.

Are these new srators or salvage? The insulation probably ages even without heat. Even sitting on a shelf.

It’s a 775 I believe. My memory isn’t that great but my research skills are, and I read a lot on this forum about them and the specific one to seek out. I do remember that i got this one from eBay from a salvaged bike that spec’d it as an OEM part.. something tells me it was a Yamaha R6 or something of the like.

and this was a new stator, from caltric, I’m sure. They make some pretty good value stuff for the gs1100. Rear brake pads, also.

My Caltrics look better after years of use with a SH775 or Compufire.
Not new, but just a hint of oil baked on.
Changing oil every year.

Yours looks like it got quite hot, so maybe your SH775 was a fake after all ?
Think that's why Ed asked for specifics on it.

The R6 didn't use a SH775. How about checking the writing on the top fin?

God god damnit damnit

checked the scribe marks on the R/R and it’s a “FAxxxxx” so that’s definitely the issue.

So I got one on eBay today for $36 that is definitely Sh775

i saw that my last stator was purchased in oct 2021. And the gs is just one of 5 bikes so it doesn’t even get used full time!

in theory, the sh775 ought to keep the amperage between stator and r/r low, and the wire disconnect points should keep from being overheated, right? Mine were stiff and the plastic jackets on the bullet connections were brittle.

Good job, buying a SH775.

This is my recommended way to hook it up. Key element: wire the stator direct to the R/R, bypassing the factory harness.

Totally, thanks. That’s how I have the current one wired in.

wonder how long it will be until a new stator is needed now. Hopefully it can run the rest of the season with this new help.

Nessism That post and picture should be a easily accessible "STICKY" somewhere. So many people are getting duped by these fake, junky R/R's. It's too bad EBAY doesn't do a dang thing about this.:)

When I installed a 775, I deliberately left the slightly-cooked stator in place just to see how long it would last.
That was about 2015 - it's still working fine. Absolutely without a doubt it would have expired long since with the old regulator.

big up

thanks for saving me $80!!

Yes, but; I keep a spare stator on a shelf just in case, and I rarely go out beyond battery re-home capacity, should the old stator stop working.
I think I've proved my point to myself, it's beyond time to hoik out the old stator.

CK, in your first post you mention that you have a MOSFET R/R and later show a picture of a 775.

With the proof that you have a 775, you need to adjust your thinking a bit, it is NOT a MOSFET R/R.

MOSFET is simply the type of transistor that is used in the R/R. It is more efficient than the typical silicon transistor, so it is a bragging point, but it would still be in a shunt-type R/R, which the 775 is not.

Sorry to respond for CK, but he said that he had a FAxxx unit, but he has subsequently bought a SH775 now.

Ya I originally said mosfet my bad.

put the cover back on today w new gasket, checked charging voltage. Not charging. So a new stator is on the way, and the cover’s coming back off.

New stator arrived today, we are charging 14v @ idle thru a 25a fuse
