    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

butterfly bushings

ok im back...... im in the middle of cleaning my carbs and im ready to dip carb num 3 ..... i was ready to put it in the can when i noticed that the butterfly rod had some bushings that apear to be eather neoprene or plastic on it ..... the problem is that the only way to remove them is to take out the two screws that hold the butterfly on the rod.... in my experence of rebuilding carbs ( ase certified mecanic) those screws eather strip or damage the butterfly rod they are on ......
so my question is do you typicly remove the rod and the bushings hoping not to damage anything. or is noone experianceing any neg side effects from dipping the carbs with the bushings atached.

bike is a 80 gs 1100L

Dip the carbs with the seals still installed but I recommend only dipping the minimum amount of time necessary to get them clean inside.
 
they are more like spacers than seals... (meaning they are loose)

and im looking more for actual experiance... (not shure if you were speeking from that or not you didnt say)

In the last several years I think I have only heard of one guy that removed the butterflies, then asked about it.

I can't tell you how many carbs I have dipped, but I tend to leave each one in for a full day and have not noticed any problems (yet).
I actually forgot one carb in the dip for three days. That carb is still in use in my stable, have not seen any problems because of the dip time.

Use as little time as necessary, but don't worry if it takes a full day.

Dip them if the alternative is pulling the butterfly's.
 
thats what i figgd ..... just wanted to make shure . good weather is on the way and dont want to be down for to long.......
 
I rebuilt a set for a guy that stopped through here a few years ago. He was up against so I offered to do them for free and shipped them back out of pocket. I even paid for the o-ring kit and gave him manifold gaskets and a petcock I had lying around. Anyway, I removed the butterflies without any problem. The o-rings on the butterflies are probably the most important if you're worried about air leaks. It all went back together without a hitch.
 
if ya dont mind giving me some help... how did you get hte screws out of the buterflys ..... they are stamped on the backside so they cant come out accidentally ... and they eather damage the rod or the philips head strips.....

i would love some tips ....

Nothing special, just made sure to use a screwdriver that fit the screw heads correctly. If you're worried about them vibrating loose a little Loctite should do the trick
 
ahh i see well sence i dont have the corect jap screwdriver. so it looks like im just gona use a vacume tester to check for leaks at the butterflys ... if not im just gona dunkm .... if i have leaks then ill have ot order the proper tools and orings......
