    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Calipers wont fit

Tha caliper and bracket in the right of your pic the squarer one look a lot like the caliper and bracket on my 750L. The L has leading axle forks which would move the disk forward from your position I think and allow the holes to line up. I bow to more experienced GSers but I think the caliper will work you just need teh right bracket for the non leading axle forks.

Took some pic's and measurements for you this morning.
Your green measurement was closer to 72mm and the blue one was closer to 65mm.
The thickness of the caliper adapter was 12.90mm at the retaining bolt mount.

My rims and rotors are off getting polished and painted currently as I am making
repairs for the '82 GS1200G project that I started a thread on.
Let me know if you want measurements from GS1000G or GS1000L models as well.
The caliper adapter's from the '83 GS1100E model are much thicker at about 15.50mm.

Just shy of 72mm...

I did have a spare set of brackets from a '80 G Chuck Hahn gave me. I took the left caliper and bracket assembly off of my '80 850G and bolted the left side spare in it's place. my caliper fits the spare bracket and the spare bracket fits the bike.

Send them to "oohsam" in Australia so that he can mount his calipers. ;)

i am building a 1979 GS1000E and upgraded the brakes to the slotted rotors and newer calipers . i just went through the same exact problem you are going through the calipers are the same but the caliper carriers [the part that bolts to the forks ] are different for a L model because of the leading axle front forks but the G and E models are the same i bought 2 sets off of ebay befor i realised they were for a gs1000L and i could only get the top hole to bolt up .
 
Wow thanks guys. You know what, its probably 72mm...I measured this witha measuring tape so I might be 1 or 2 mm out..seems as though I am.

In the meantime Ill have to resolve the spacers and this axle, as from all your pics, my axle is very very wrong.

Tom. I think you're spot on here. Just need a new bracket and part of my issue is resolved. Thanks heaps for ur input!

Measure the spacing again. it would be waste of time and money if those forks are off something other than a 'G'. when I get home I'll see what I can scrounge up for an axle and spacers as I bought good spares to re-plate for the Skunk so I should have a set or two. they might not be pretty, but they will suffice.

a few more things.... make sure the boots you have for the caliper slide pins are in good shape; the ones on those brackets are junk. I only have 'one guide, pad' you need three more. [#7 in this drawing http://www.alpha-sports.com/spst/1980 GS850G/19.gif ]

Steve came round to my house yesterday with another Axle and we pulled it all apart to find out what was going on.
My axle on there looked too short, and the wheel wasn't centred between the forks.
So we pulled it off and had a look, and swapped out the axles and spacers etc.

We still couldn't get it perfectly centred, but it was better. So now I have 2 axles, 4 sets of spacers, and a few other spacers.
Looking at the schematic its a little difficult to see what goes where, and in what order.

If you have a picture of can whip up something quick of the order that the axle should be assembled it would be very very helpful.
I think I've tried most combinations but have more different ways to try it.
 
Ok, so thanks to rustybronco, and nufnuf (steve) I've managed to get the wheel mounted with enough space for each caliper to fit.
rustybronco provided me with some pics of his bike so I could see the profile of the spacers etc.
He worked out that in this schematic

#8 is backwards. I flipped this around, and tried my other spacer with the flange for that side, and low and behold, it was spot on.
I thought I tried this with nufnuf (steve) but I think i had the spacer as per the pic in the schematic, thus pushing the wheel over, ever so slightly.
Now all I need is a nut and pin to hold the axle in, and the right caliper brackets and I should have my front end almost done!

Having the same problem as oohsam with some 81-83 calipers I'm trying to apply to my 1979 850G. So if anyone still has an extra set of brackets PM me.
 
Casell98, pop a post in the parts wanted section. I'm sure someone has a spare set.
