    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cam chain guide, does this look right?

Here is the no 1 cam chain guide I pulled out of the bike. Its bent backwards, looks to me like it is curving the wrong way. I donnu though so I would really appreciate a more experienced review please.

Well, from the other pics I have found it looks like the right shape. But this thing just will not slide all the way down in to the holder :( Anyone have any ideas?
 
That the one that goes in the front of the motor? If so, it looks like it has to much of a bend in it to me. But like I said, it's been a while. YMMV.
Maybe someone else can chime in.

Yea, its the one that was holding my valve cover up. I am thinking this thing happened a while ago because the tach cable is completely oil encrusted along with the whole area around there this thin slides down. I am thinking it got popped somehow cause it just wont slide all the way down to seat the top in the grooves. I am gonna order another ones. Gonna be a real joy trying to get the cams back on lol. Thanks.

Use a set of mole grips to hold the cams in place. Makes the job easy. Make sure you bolt them down in the correct sequence and torque.
 
I had to google "mole grips" to find out what the hell they were. When did folks start calling vise grips mole grips?
I need to get out more.

lol, I was gonna google it too :) Perhaps its a UK term cause the first site listed was a UK site selling them. Wouldnt vise grips gouge up the cam?
 
No, MOLE grips will not harm the cams as long as they are kept near the middle, off of any bearing surface and not set too tight. Just tight enough to hold the camshaft down agaist spring pressure.
 
BTW, the cam chain guide does not look too bad, It is just a bit of a PITA to re-fit.

I already ordered a new one, I needed the gasket for the tension rod anyway. I am worried that the issue isnt with the guide its with the seat at the bottom. Which would need the case cracked to get to and I am not setup for that :( Wonder how much the local shop will charge me to do it :(
 
$55/hr at the only local shop who whould do it. I hope this new one fits cause I am gonna have a tough time footing the bill to have the case split!!
 
try flipping it around. (not upside down, rotate around it's long axis!!!!)

that was my mistake. it should push the cam chain towards the center of the engine.

Also, you need to install it with the cams out, and probably start it more straight down into the engine, then pull it back to its seat, and pop into place.

Yea thats my problem, its pushing on the chain and its not seated correctly. I have tried wiggling this thing ever which way from sunday and it is a real PITA with the engine still in the bike! It just wont seat and lock back. I am worried the bend is to much out of whack thats why I ordered another one. Its cracked all over the place too which I am sure is not good ;)
 
even with one in better shape, mine was also a pain to reinstall. just jiggle it around.


sometimes the chain can become jammed/stuck together at spots, or block the spot its going into....watch out for that...dont drop anything in there!!!




have fun.. dont split the cases if its not leaking.really. dont. (im serious)

I have wiggled that thing every which way from Sunday and it just wont seat. I am hoping the new one shows up by this weekend and solves my problem or I am going to be a very unhappy camper.

I tried moving the chain too to be sure it wasnt bunched up and still nothing. I tried shining a flash light down there and I couldn't see squat.
 
You are aware of that the chain guide must be installed before the cams?
Pull cam chain upwards and at the same time rotate engine backwards,
just a little.
I had same problem and the reason was jammed cam chain.

Yup yup yup. Now rotating it backwards is that clockwise or counterclockwise?

Hi, I just went through this on the weekend. I replaced the cylinder gaskets top to bottom.
with the cams removed & the chain pulled up & back you should be able to rotate the guide 90' (sideways in the slot) slide the lower end (without the tabs that hang in the front of the head) then rotate so the arch is facing towards the cam chain & it will drop into the notches in the head.
it took me a few tries but not as many as getting the cylinders down over the rear cam chain guide.

Good luck with it.
