    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So I did valve clearances and noticed scoring inside the cam cover from the cam chain on both sides (see pic). I can only assume that the tensioner was not working properly at some point and the chain was loose enough on the sprockets to make contact with the cover.

What I know: the PO told me when reviving the bike, it "made a racket". Someone told him to give the chain tensioner a couple whacks with a hammer to loosen it up (ugh). But it evidently worked and the "racket" was gone.

Any tips for making sure this is not still occurring? Is there something I can coat these grooves with, that will stay put enough (ie, with oil flying around) for me to remove the cover after running and see if the chain is making contact?

I'd put the engine on 1-4 T (TDC) and remove the cam chain tensioner. Then take it apart, replace the seals, and make sure everything is working smoothly. Even if the tensioner is working smoothly now, at some point it wasn't so a refresh can't hurt.
 
Thanks. I did take it out and grease the pushrod--could not get the lock shaft assembly to loosen, even with it in a vise and appling significant force--I read bwringer's rebuild tutorial, and that said to be wary of forcing it too hard, and leave it alone if it wouldn't budge. So I didn't get to fully refresh it.
 
Above all, make sure you install the tensioner properly. The instructions call for retracting the pushrod and locking it in place, then installing the tensioner. After it is installed, release the pushrod. After the pushrod is released, turn the setscrew in until it touches, then back it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn and lock it in place. That will allow the pushrod to move and do its job. Too many times, the "back it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn" part is not done.
