    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cam Chain tensioner oil LEAK!!!!

ok my tensioner is leaking, but not from the two bolts that hold it on... its coming out where the spring loaded hadle thing is.... it leaks quite a bit too...

what do i do about this? is there a way to tighten it? im at a loss and it leaks enough to pool on the engine and drip on the ground after i park it!
 
i plugged the breather tube that used to go to the airbox... could this have something to do with it? i didnt know if maybe the crankcase has too much pressure in it without that breather and now its forcing it out the cam tensioner.....

Unplugg Your C Case Vent. The Gasket Ontop Is Restrictive Enough. I Put A Small Crank Case Breater Like K&n Make. Good Luck S.n.
 
Yes you can't plug that breather hose or you will get excessive crankcase pressures causing leaks all over. They make little breather filters or pods that you can attach to the hose to keep the oil off of the engine. The tensioner has a seal and a couple of o-rings in it and they can be replaced.
 
There is a seal on the shaft that the Kurled knob turns on. Its probably bad and needs to be replaced. I doubt it has anything to do with the breather tube.

Sometimes this seal isn't on the parts fiche'. When I get home tonight I"ll look up the part number for you. Its the same for practically all GS tensioners.

You should leave your breather tube open.
 
i will unplug the tube then and see if it helps any! if not then i will have to rebuild the tensioner with new seals!
 
Like I said earlier, on some models the seal you may need isn't listed or shown on the parts schematic. You may not have this problem, but if you run into it (like I did on my '79), I have a part number you can try.

Suzuki part no. 09264-10006 is that seal for my tensioner and I'm virtually certain it would be the same for yours.

would i have to go to suzuki? or is there an online carrier that has them?

Do NOT order as STOCK Suzuki tensioner! Call APE at 661-256-7309 & order the MANUAL tensioner for the GS 1100. Ray.
 
what is the addvantage of the manual one? and how much does it cost?
 
I don't know about manual tensioners at all, or what the issues are there. But I do know you can rebuild your stock tensioner for a few bucks with all the seals and maybe a new spring.

If you decide to go the rebuild route, I would at least start here..............

i saw the manual ones, they are $50.. i would be afraid i had it set wrong....

i will rebuild this one if it needs it, im gonna ride it more today and see if it still leaks, i unplugged my c-case vent
 
If you buy the manual tensioner & just ASK one of us that use them you can learn how to adjust it & you will probably never go back! They are trouble free & will never back out, if locked down correctly, & will not cause you terminal engine damage. Seriously, they are pretty bulletproof! Ask Big Jay, the owner of APE who makes them. Go to a drag race & look at all the GSs & KZs there & count the ones that DON'T have one. There is a reason. Ray.
 
The chances are very good that since you have unplugged your crankcase breather vent, you will not get enough internal pressure to force any oil through the cam chain tensioner seal. As for replacing it with a APE manual tensioner, if you're drag racing, have a high hp race engine and are constantly running it at max power, the APE tensioner is a good idea. For the street and about 99% of everyday riders, the stock tensioner is fine. In about 750K road miles, I've never had a stock tensioner fail.

well i just rode it up to the hospital, and i came in so quickly that i forgot to check if it was leaking when i got off... so i will check it as soon as i go down there...

There is a sight that will show you how to rebuild the tensioner.Use the search and you will find it.I did mine a couple of months ago and it only cost 7 bucks for the parts. There is the gasket 1 seal and 2 o-rings.I even bought a new spring cause it was only 2 bucks.I'm pretty sure it's bwringer's home web sight.It has a step by step process.
 
well i put a good 50 miles on it, and it doesnt appear to be leaking now... im pretty sure that was it. ill continue to watch it and see what happens...

That's the way mine started.One day it would leak ,the next day it wouldnt.Then my starter housing drain hole started leaking oil.That's were the oil goes when your riding.It blows around on the starter cover and down inside till it leaks out the starter drain hole.
