    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cam cover gasket question

Real gaskets have Suzuki cam cover gaskets and they note how many holes. My 1981 GS1000G cam cover has 19 holes and I can't get them and have to cut them myself. However, Real Gaskets have a 19 hole gasket for a 1984 GS1100 gasket. It looks like mine.

It seems my bike might have a ring-in cam cover, except I have the two valve motor and I thought the 1100 was a four valve motor. This means the heads are different therefore the cam covers are different. Aren't they?

Was there a 19 hole GS1000 head?
Is the GS1100 a two valve motor?

Does this count for the Imponderables book?

The guy there will make you a gasket if you send him your valve cover. Check Bikebandit and see if it shows the same part number for the two bikes.
 
The G shaft drive models (650, 850, 1000 and 1100) kept the 2 valve per cylinder heads after the others went to 4 valve in 1980. The 2 valve head is simpler and easier to maintain which are both good things on bike when you're a long way from home. The engines are also tuned for a wider torque curve rather than peak horsepower so, again, the 2 valve head is a better solution.

According to my parts cross reference, all the GS1000 models used the same valve cover gasket from 1978 to 1980 (including the 1980 and 1981 G and GL) p/n 11173-49002 superseded by 11173-49003, superseded by 11173-49004 and 11173-49004-H17

So, it seems that the 16 hole RG-GS1000 gasket is the right one.

Alpha Sports schematic also shows a 16 bolt cover for the 81 1000 G http://70.85.253.252/spst/1981%20GS1000G/11.htm with 6 40mm bolts and 10 35mm.

Are you sure you have the 19 bolt? Does it have that extra hole up front in the middle where the cover sticks out to go around the cam chain?
 
My motor definitely has 19 holes, including the extra one in the cam chain cutaway - I've made two gaskets for it in the last few years.

I know that the guy I bought this bike from bought it as a box of bits after the previous owner smashed a piston into the valves and never got the repair fiinished. I am now guessing that the box of bits had an 1100 head in it instead of a replacement 1000 head.

It also explains why the spare GS1000G motor that I bought ages ago to properly repair the bodged repair that I inherited has a different bolt pattern.

Perhaps now I can buy a proper gasket instead of cutting my own in future.
