DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

hey guys, i'm new to this site.
i'm replacing the valve cover gasket and cam plugs on an '82 gs850g.
i'm using brush-on gasket sealer for the valve cover gasket.
should i use something else on the cam plugs? (hi-temp silicone?)

thanks

Man are you in for it when these old dogs get at you for using that sealant! They're like:eek:, then ! If your mating surfaces are in reasonable shape a thin coat of grease works well on the gasket and enables you to probably reuse it when you go back in there for valve adjustments. I do use a little black sealant on the bottom side of the moons, if you have new ones the tops shouldn't need anything.

Good luck

Not an "old dog", and I won't jump on you for using sealant, I just hope that YOU are the one that has to remove the cover when you have to adjust the valves next time.

How long do you think it will take to rack up about 3,000 miles on the odometer? That's how long before you get to have your "fun".

Yep, if your cam plugs are not soft and pliable, just a touch of sealant on the curved surface only, then use grease, oil or WD-40 on both sides of the gasket, and you will be set.

On gaskets, I use Hylomar universal blue, that way they are easy to remove, anytime.
I don't use silicone on them, either.

does anyone check valves every 3000 miles?
I do that the first couple of times, until I see a pattern developing, then will stretch out the interval.

That pattern is real easy to see if you have some guy's spreadsheet.

Oh, and omc gel seal is a nice sealant
ixnay that brush on form-a-gasket, I can't fathom how anyone would use that stuff more than once.
after an intial adjustment I adjust my valves every 10000 to 15000 km.
