Cams vs Big bore

Hi Guys,

My 82 Katana 1100 project is progressing.

I have a new set of OEM pistons and rings I was going to install. However, I found a Wiseco 1166 kit and also a set of Yoshimura ST-1 cams!!

If I could only afford to do piston kit or cams, what should I choose?

Also, what is the correct deck height, and how much can I mill off the head for compression if I use the OEM pistons?

I currently have a set of Mikuni RS36 carbs, Dyna S with coils, and Motogpwerks exhaust.

The bike is for the street and will not see the dragstrip.

Thanks

Big bore for torque.

And since BB kits almost always boost compression I don't think you need to mess with decking the head.

yep, bore. you can do the cams easily later if you so desire, without major surgery.

Deck is adjusted with cylinder base gaskets, Cometic can help with this . I would do both 1166, 36 RS carbs and cams, easy 135 horse, 150 with good street head and 4 into one pipe.

bore then some EFE cams later on. Had a genuine 125rhp engine running 1170. efe cams 33 smoothbores with sexy Tingate exhaust.. not hard to get power from a gsx engine

With HP gains other issues can pop up. If you run 'em hard you will need to look into crank welding and a clutch basket. Others will chime in. Listen up these guys know their sheet.

I got your message and replied for you to call me, left my #. You haven't called yet.
Ray.

Hi Ray.

I was waiting to make a few decisions on what I was going to do with these motors exactly before I called.

I'm going to do the 1982 GS1100 motor first. This one will be stock bore/pistons, stock cams, Mikuni RS36 with pod filters, and a Yoshimura exhaust.
I have already had the crank welded, installed APE welded clutch basket, GS750 oil pump gears and a heavy duty cam chain.
All I really need to know with this one is the correct deck height and a good starting point for cam timing.

If you would still like to talk, what time of the day is good for you, and where are you located (time zone)?

The other two motors I will wait until I have gathered the parts together before wasting your time.
