I know i am opening myself up for some ribbing here, but what is the trick to getting my '83 gs850 up onto the center stand? I just dont seem hoss enough to do it.

Help a weakling out:o

Stand on the foot lever, no weight on the other foot. Lift the handle back and up.
Easy stuff.
I'll take a video of my wife putting the 1100 up if it will help.

Its technique....

Its technique....

I always get my 650 up on center stand while straddling it. Lean forward towards handle bars w/front brake engaged. Stand on center stand and transfer weight backwards. Works....but I think its resulting in my handle bars getting a bit wiggly.

My BMW conveniently has a handle that's right under the seat and I can do it from the side quite easily.

I was always afraid that the GS would topple over to the other side when using the grab bar under the seat on the left side. Now that I've more experience I can do it from the side now too.

Practice practice practice....swearing helps too.

:D

Dont feel bad, my center stand is very badly worn down, i usually need to get my brother to help me put it on the center stand, because im scared of using too much force and dropping the bike.

my dad has already dropped my bike TWICE, once riding it and once trying to move it, and i've had to replace the brake lever and the clutch lever and fix one corner light already.....so i REALLY dont feel like taking any risks of dropping her again......knowing my luck.

I couldn't figure the thing out either the first time I tried one. Ended up finding a video on Youtube.

Left hand on handlebar, right hand on grab bar or some frame part right above the rear tire, one foot on center stand (all your weight here), then pull up with the right hand, and back with the left hand. Lean a little back and to your right, let physics do the rest.

And if your rear shocks are kind of saggy, got too much weight on the bike, roll it up on top of a flat 2x4, then do the above mentioned methods and it'll be on the centrestand.:)

also, before you start heaving, lean the bike to make sure both feet of the c-stand are hitting the ground - makes it a lot easier.

Tip- try to raise her up on asphalt or on a rubber rug (the flat thin kind). The stand will slide on concrete.

And if y'all want some more practice, I'll let you come practice on my 900-pound Wing. :D

Actually, I think it's easier than my wife's 850L. :o

.

Do not try and horse it back with both hands on the handlebars, simply step straight down on the extended pedal and pull up with you right hand on the passenger handle and your left on the handlebar. Piece a cake.

It's the only stand I use on my 650L, the side stand is actually harder for me to get my fat #13 boot on. If you follow the tips given (left side of bike, right foot on center stand peg, and right hand on the grab rail) you'll almost laugh, yes laugh, on how easy it really is. As mentioned...do NOT use the handle bar/ monkey yank to raise the bike, it kills the adjustment splines on the triples and you'll be looking for a new set of those AND another set of bars. :-\\\

Put all your weght on the lever sticking out the left side of the center stand. Jerk the handlebars towards you. Wallah
If you get it halfway use the front brake to stop backward motion and jerk the bars again to finish the job.

its not you. i have 3 1982 gs1100glz bikes. one is cake to get on the center stand, one is an all out beech, and the other takes (3) progressive greater rocking motions to get her up. the bottom of my foot aches for days. I get more workout than i do at the gym. All (3) are the same bike. all standard trim, just different colors. The blue one is the hardest. what color is your bike?

It took me 5 seasons to get it too. The secret, as stated, is to get both feet of the stand down on the concrete. That means you have to push the bikeaway from your body which is contrary to what you think you should do. I was always afraid the bike would get away from me and go over to the right.

Once the feet are both down it is a snap.with right foot on the stand and right hand on the frame or handle straighten up your body...the bike will pop up.

Now a harder project is lifting it up off the ground if it does go over:eek: But that's a lesson for another day.

There are lots of good vids on you tube that will help so have a look.

Cheers,
spyug

sorry to resurrect a dead thread but seeing some other posts about this subject reminded me that I should post here.

After a bit of practice I can get the 850 up with ease.

Thanks for the help guys

by the way my 650 will practically JUMP onto the center stand

I admit to having a problem with my GPz750 trying to leap into the ceiling b/c the engine is not fully installed...
But seriously, the worst part of this is allowing the bike to lean away from you. Once you allow that to happen, getting the bike on the centerstand is relatively easy. The only hard part is if someone is watching you. Then it becomes about 10x more difficult. Just a fact of life, kind of like making love...wait, oh, never mind...
