  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'm curious on what exactly I would need to do in order to replace stock airbox/filter to aftermarket pods. Would I have to re-jet my carbs. I own a stock 82 suzuki gs850l

Welcome to the GSR!

One question... WHY?! And yes, re-jetting will be necessary, and can be a prolonged, painful experience.

BTW, I have been to Mountain Grove many, many times. My brother and his family used to live there.

Yes, you need to rejet when going to pods. Without also adding an aftermarket exhaust there isn't much point in pods (aside from much easier access to the carbs and battery), the stock exhaust is too restrictive and limits the gains you can make.

Even with an exhaust the gains are nominal. Best case you pick up 7% more hp, and not all exhausts will result in a gain like that. Most that do are loud, and have been out of production for 20 years.
 
Yes, you will have to re-jet.

Yes, you will have "fun" doing the re-jetting.

Easiest way is to get a Dynojet Stage 3 kit, which is about $125.

As JJ asked, "Why?". You have to have some serious motivation to spend that much money for a "look" and some extra noise.

I'm curious to know where you got your 7% number? My 1100E dyno'd at 102rwhp at 3400ft elevation (~10% down from sea level) with the back half of the airbox removed running 132 main jets along with a Kerker 4-1 canister system. I now have APE pods on and am up to 142 mains, so I expect to be making more power than the dyno runs showed. A stock 1100E is going to make maybe 85-87rwhp at this elevation, so how am I only getting a 7% improvement?

Here is a chart made based on a Motorcyclist article from Joe Minton back in the day. Take note that some pipes resulted in less power than stock. Some guys bashed the tests saying that pods were not used. Not sure that would matter but maybe. At any rate, these numbers are FACTS and it would take some big improvements with the pods to just reach that 7% other than maybe the Supertrapp.

BTW, the title is wrong. The bike is a GS1100E.

Thanks for that chart, it is good info. I'm not surprised on the pipes, lots of them from that era were built for looks and sound more than performance. Unequal length headers, incorrect tube sizes, etc. Suzuki spent serious effort to get performance within the noise and emissions regs. Combining a pipe and pods does give you more than the sum of the two measured separately because they work together. As I said, my bike showed 102rwhp @ 8500rpm at 3400ft, which equates to ~112rwhp at sea level, for a solid 15+% gain over the stock bike as shown in that chart and the stock bike was running with the airbox lid removed. I would like to find a better pipe than the Kerker, but as you noted they are 30 years old and like hen's teeth.
