I recently got some pod style air filters for my 81 gs650. I put them on and it starts and idles but if i try to give it any gas it immediately wants to die. I know its getting a lot more air than before, is there a carb adjustment i need to make? OR some sort of vacuum leak causing this?
Thanks!

Yes.

You need to rejet when adding pods.

Depending on the pods, you can also have a flat spot that no amount of jetting will fix.

Adjust idle mixture a tad more rich.

Try 110's or 112 main jets. (The 81 does have CVs, right? I can't remember.)

There is no 'adjustment' that will help you until you replace the jets.

bahhh i shoulda known i would need to do that before i put them on. : / Well thanks for the info. Im planning on taking the carbs apart to clean within the month so if i decide i want to use the pods ill just re-jet then. Whats the general thought on using the pods anyways? They more trouble than they're worth?

Depends on the carbs and the pods.

The very good K&N with a small velocity stack in them, great. Also not cheap.

The Emgo ones, not so great. The inside shape causes turbulence at certain intake speeds that cause flat spots (too much vacuum, so runs rich but only right there). But they are cheap.

Some CV carbs do not play well with any pods. Others do. I wouldn't pod the GS's CV carbs, but that's just me. Box or stacks, basically. No pods.

Alright, ya i got the Emgo's off of ebay for like 25$. I would much rather have a clunky airbox that i dont have to worry about tuning for than some pods on at this point. Thanks for the info. Time to go put the box back in hah

Good idea on the airbox

You'd have to love taking your carbs off , taking them apart, and putting them back on to put Emgos on

You did want to ride the bike, didn't you?/

Good choice to stay with the stock airbox, but I had to comment on this:

The stock jets in a 650 are 110. :-k

Depending on the pods (I see you have EMGO) and whether you also have a 4-into-1 pipe, the jetting suggestions would range from 120 to 135. :o

Even then, you probably would not be happy with the jetting. Since most of your riding time is actually spent on the pilot and needle circuits, you need to make adjustments there. Fortunately, the pilot circuit usually only needs a bit more twisting out on the adjustment screw. The needles, though, are another story. About the only way to get better needles is to get a DynoJet kit that will include new mains and needles. Basically "plug and play" right out of the box, but you have to pay for the privilege.

If you had gotten the better (also more expensive) K&N filters, we might have encouraged you to go ahead and get the DynoJet kit, but since you settled for the cheap ones, we will merely say "good thing you didn't waste any more money on them". :D

Oops, thought I read 550...

ya even though i'm gonna clean carbs I didn't wanna mess with rejetting or anything. shoulda read up on it before I bought them. and I wasn't aware the emgo filters weren't any good, so 25 bucks sounded pretty good.
