If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi Guys,

I have a 1980 GS550E and may need a replacement for my number 2 carb body.

Given that several GSbikes use the BS32SS, am I able to use a number 2 body from one of the other size/year GSbikes as long as I swap out the size/year specific parts? (jets, etc...) or are there a limited range of bikes that have a compatible body? also, are all 4 bodies identical, or does it need to be another number two body?

Thanks in advance for the help :)

James

The bodies are unique to their position on the bike.

There are several different model bikes that used the same basic BS32 carbs as your bike, one main difference is the air jets are pressed into the body and are not adjustable.

Edit: Just went to the garage and found a #2 from a 550. Threw it in the dip sauce to clean it up a little but it seems okay with one exception, the throttle plate was removed by the previous owner and I don't have the screws. It's no big deal to reinstall the plate/screws using some red loctite, assuming you have some screws that is. I could borrow some from another carb body but would rather not if at all possible.

If you need the screws, I do have a few trashed bodies that I can extract the screws from. Let me know if you need them.

Throttle Plate, part 33? if so, I have it and the original screws. I basically have the complete carb, but the pilot screw head is pretty stripped and the threads in the body itself seem to be damaged as well. It was the previous owner (It was really me...:culpability:)

I have the originals from mine, but thanks for offering to help out!! My buddy was right, you guys are awesome.

I don't know how the plate screws are locked to prevent them from being ingested - it's one reason the screws are soft brass as they would be the next softest material in the combustion chamber next to the air/fuel and hopefully won't damage a piston or valves.

I prefer to stake the screws. I'm not convinced Locktite isn't eroded by gas and alcohol over time. And do you really want to chance heating the red stuff heat softened) if there's residual gas in the carb.

By the way. would a used complete carb be less espensive than just a body or plate?

Good point about the Locktite, hadn't considered that.

What do you mean when you say "Stake the screws"? I was hoping that someone had had a body they were not using, whole or scavenged that they would be willing to sell. I will post to the wanted to buy section, I just wanted to be sure of my options from other bikes before putting it out there, I also noticed that my main jet (92.5) is broken at the threads...awesome. Very delicate parts...

Staking the screws in addition to using red loctite would be a fine idea. Just get a metal rod of some sort and support the throttle shaft from the back side before you bang on the screw head.

Suzuki sold the screws and throttle plates so obviously they were not overly concern about servicing these parts. I've pulled the throttle plates out of several sets of carbs and haven't had any issue with the screws falling out later.
