    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Carb synchronizers

Hehe, that's why I quit using mercury carb sticks. I think some sort of ball valve wears out, and when it does..

You're draining the oil and hoping nothing is fubar.

Round guages are harder to use, but I spent nearly 10 years in Metrology, I got very good at using guages.

Has anyone ever used a simple vacuum gauge and moved it around from carb to carb to get the same reading at the same RPM? Does it bounce around too much to work?
 
It can be done, but one has to insert an aquarium type air valve in-line and adjust to restrict the vacuum flow to prevent the gauge needle from bouncing around. Also, using one gauge makes the adjustment more difficult as the adjustments all interact in that adjusting one carb changes the readings obtained on the others some.
Takes a lot of patience.

I got some replacement mercury, thanks to a generous fellow GSResources member, and had an easy time this go around.

The simple, ancient, Carb-Stix that I use, have no valves, just four tubes and hoses coming up out of the mercury reservoir. It worked fine this time at an idle speed of 1,200 rpm. Funny thing though, I adjusted the throttle cable to open the throttles for easy adjustment, then forgot to reset it. When I started the motor, it raced to about 4,000 rpm, but it didn't suck the mercury out before I could shut it off. Close one!
 
I saw the expensive carb sticks but got the carbtune mercury one's anyway.If you take good care of them and sync by the book,1750rpm's for my bike,everthing should be fine.It is a tool and should be used properly.

Hi, in the clymer manual the synchronizing of the CV carbs from 1980 on states that for the ( manometer gauge ) 1 & 4 carbs ,the centre of the balls are in line with the centre line marked on the manometer,while for carbs 2 & 3 the edge of the balls are under the centre line of the of the manometer, i only have the dial type guages with the damping taps ,I would be greatfull for any advice, as i thought all gauges should read the same when balanced, and wouldn't know how much to offset (if at all) the dial gauges 1 & 4 to 2 & 3.:confused:

Set the inside ones a little lower than the outside.You have to set them all using #3 carb because it has no adjustment.That should get you there.

You synchronize them by reading vacuum not pressure so tire pressure gagues will not work.
 
Has anyone here ever tried a fully electronic sync tool like the Twinmax electronic carburetor balancer?
I have been looking at getting one as I am just about to get my carbs back on my bike.
No mercury to jerk around with sounds good to me.
Question: If I get a set of the 5mm adapters, can I just leave them installed with vacuum caps to make it easier next time I want to sync?

The Holy Grail of them all is the one made by Morgan and it uses metal rods not Mercury, so that eliminates the "Oops Factor" when blipping the throttle. http://www.carbtune.com/
Yes, you can leave the 5mm adapters in place with caps. As a matter of fact, on my bike I made an aluminum port for the left side of the bike where these vacuums are readily available for me to tune and experiment. If you decide to sell a few of those vacuum blocks, I'll definitely take one off your hands. :-D

 
Instead of using water or mercury can you use a larger hose - put in a ping pong ball - then attach it to smaller hoses?

That's a great idea! The next time my bike needs to be synched, I'll take it to the hospital emergency room. I'll just speak Espanol and tell them I'm here illegally so they won't try to bill me.:-D

If they do a poor job......I'll sue the hell out of 'em!\\:D/

Yeah, and if you go to the emregency room they cannot refuse treating your bike because you dont have insurance!
