DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

carb woes

I tried to work through this myself but am getting no where.
I bought a set of carbs from a reputable carb guy. He said he would jet them for the K&N pods I have. I Put them on the bike and it runs horrible.
I set the idle mixture screws to 4 turns. Which got me wondering, is a turn 360 degrees, or 180 degrees?
It will start and idle but if I open up the throttle a bit it dies after the engines starts sounding heavily muffled.
I noticed though that if I choke it the RPM go WAY up, no tach at the moment, but I guess easily 6-8K. and the engine sounds great.
Plugs are all new and set to .65MM.
There is a bit of popping from cylinder 3 or 4.
Inititally cylinder 3 did not run, but it has since started working
Does all this add up to a common denominator?
What do I look at now?

Thanks!

Which bike are you talking about and what is the ID on the carb?

Sorry I did not list all the requisite info,,, 80' gs1100E
The carbs look identical to the ones that I had on the bike before, one side is imprinted with MIC Mikuni and the other side shows Made in Japan.
I have K&N's so I did not put the airbox back on.

If you have the plugs gapped at .065 of an INCH, there is a LOT of your problem! Set the plug gaps to .028 & start over with your carb tuning! It's a wonder it would run at all with that much gap!!! Ray.

sorry, decimal in the wrong spot, damn dyslexia... 0.65mm My clymer manual says 0.6-0.7 so I set it in the middle.

If your compression is good, valves are adjusted, and the motor is sound the jetting is off.
What type of pipe are you running with the K&Ns?
Did the guy install a Dynojet or Factorypro kit?
I set these carbs up all the time and I can tell you where to start if you had good needle jets and more info.

I think the compression is good, but I should get a guage and check.
I haven't done the valves,, I should probably do that.
I have the stock exhaust with new gaskets.
I don't know what he installed, I have sent him an email to find out.

Thanks for the response.
