When parked after riding, carbs tend to leak through over flow, I'm guessing it's a floater issue? It's not a big leak but nonetheless a leak

Which bike do you have? is the petcock manual or vacuum? Have the carbs been worked on? We need more info.

sorry, its 79 gs1000 im not sure if they have work on them, my guess is yes, it has pods, and a vance hines4-1, the petcock has a vacuum to it yes

What year?
78-79 had different carbs and petcock from the '80.
Did you leave your bike parked with the petcock on prime?
Sidestand or Centerstand?

i dont know if my petcock is on prime or on, its missing the lever :( it only has a side stand! 1979 GS1000E

i found this one on ebay, but mine looks just like it, now that u mention it, it might just be on prime, im gonna try to turn it with a small end flat head

I believe the longer end is the "pointer" and therefore that would be prime..try turning it 180 so its pointing to the front of the bike..If it goes then that would most likely be reserve..thus straight up and down would be ON. As for whats leaking..could also be the bowl gaskets and gas will run to the lowest point before dripping. Get a good trouble light and wipe each carb down and look at the gaskets to see any new weeping. Also look closely at the fuel tee and the transfer tubes. If you have hoses on them and the outside of them are dry but it drips out the hose, then that would tell me its a float height being just a tad too low..raise it up 1MM and then see what happens. While your in there, take a Qtip and some laquer thinner and swab out the float needle seat too..a little build up on them will cause leakage as well.

Thanks guys for your time and knowledge, I'm gonna get to it now!

i had no idea it was an 80 petcock, thanks steve, is this the stock tank???

That petcock came on the 1980 bikes, but at least one person here said their '79 GS1000 came with one also. Maybe Suzuki made a late production change over? What is the manufacturing month of this bike?

Carbs leak through over flow

I have a 1979 GS-850G that I just finished with a complete top end, carb rebuild, and Dyna Electronic Ignition job. Runs great, BUT it appears I need to rebuild the petcock as well. It spits gas back out through the over flow tubes two or three times after shut off. Does that sound like a petcock problem? What is the Dreaded 80's Petcock problem? Is that what I might have? What the recommended solution?

ALSO, I replaced my starter while I had the carbs off and now - even before - it just clicks sometimes and other times it kicks right in when I hit the button. Could this be my button is in need of repair, cleaning, or replacement? Other possibilities?

yeah i have carbs 4 and 2 that spit out fuel after shut off, i think its def a carb issue, gonna order the necessities and give them a good cleaning!

Hi Denny,The 80 petcock has no lever. You may want to start your own thread and you will prob get more help.:)

One thing I did see, is the inline fuel filter you have, one thing I found on those filters is on a gravity fed fuel system they tend to restrict the flow of fuel. I've tried one like yours and some others and eventually had to remove them all. And yeah, the vacuum petcock is a piece of junk, I think I have 4-5 laying in a parts box. I'm still looking for a replacement for it, Z1 may have it.

My bike sat for 25 years. When I got it running last fall, it leaked through the overflow tubes, about a half tank over a weekend. I replaced the needle & seat assemblies to no avail. I finally bought a set of floats. This cured the problem. Floats, especially the foam type, will gain weight over time and become less buoyant. This was common in automotive carburetors and a replacement float was normally included in a rebuild kit.
Floats cost about $25 each. Also installed full size automotive fuel filter to catch any varnish chunks that could get under the needle. The little small engine type plugged too fast. The Filter is the old Mopar style, clear, about 1 1/2' dia. x 2" long with 5/16" ends.
